Does Amaharashi Onsen Isohanabi allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Isohanabi stands over Amaharashi beach, and its hot spring page offers two private baths of the Amaharashi spring, one in stone and one in hinoki, by the hour. Bath-only day visits are turned away, so these are for people who stay.

The inn publishes no tattoo rule on its hot spring page, rooms page, FAQ or front page, so nothing is promised for the shared Yuraku bath. The listing rests on its two private baths, Ichi-no-yu in stone and Ni-no-yu in hinoki, which take the Amaharashi spring and are booked by the hour. Bath-only day visits are refused, so the private baths are for staying guests and lunch-plan visitors.

The bath

The source is Amaharashi Onsen, a sodium chloride spring that the inn heats, dilutes and chlorinates; it lists the usual chloride-spring uses, from neuralgia and stiff joints to cuts, burns and chronic skin complaints. The bath building is called Tenkai-no-yu, reached along a tatami corridor with a garden behind glass. Its shared bath, Yuraku, has an open-air section facing the sea, with the Noto peninsula, the Himi coast, Toyama Bay and the Tateyama range in one sweep, and two halls, one bright and Western, one quieter and Japanese. It runs on circulating filtration and opens from 5 a.m. to midnight, closed for cleaning from noon to 1 p.m. on the women's side and 1 to 2 p.m. on the men's.

The two private baths are the reason for this listing. Ichi-no-yu is a roomy family-size tub in stone; Ni-no-yu is hinoki, built at a height that suits a carer helping someone in. Both are 60 minutes for ¥2,750 including tax and both can be entered in a wheelchair. Ichi-no-yu has slots at 3, 4:30, 6, 7:30, 9 and 10:30 p.m.; Ni-no-yu at 2:30, 4, 5:30, 7, 8:30 and 10 p.m. Book ahead through the inn's reservation line, or on the day if a slot is still open. There is no bath-only day admission, so the private baths go with a stay or a lunch plan.

The hotel

A roughly 50-room inn on the bluff over Amaharashi, with a top floor of sea-facing rooms called Ten-no-niwa, a fourth-floor wing of three rooms called Rakuru Bettei Blanche, and standard Japanese, Japanese-Western and Western rooms, some smoking. Every room bath is a unit bath or shower booth, which the inn notes is not hot spring water. Dinner is served in the dining restaurant or in private dining rooms depending on party size, with kaiseki (a multi-course Japanese meal) plans built around Toyama Bay fish including a winter yellowtail course. Check-in is 3 p.m., check-out 10 a.m. with no extension; day-trip plans run 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Getting there

From Toyama Station take the Ainokaze Toyama Railway to Takaoka, about 20 minutes, then the JR Himi line to Amaharashi, about 20 minutes. The inn sends a car to Amaharashi Station for free, about 5 minutes; phone on the day with your train time. On foot it is about 20 minutes uphill. The inn does not pick up at the Amaharashi roadside station. Drivers leave the Noetsu Expressway at Takaoka-kita and follow the coast for about 20 minutes.

How we know

Bath layout confirmed, tattoo policy not published Checked on the official site (the hot spring page sells the two private baths as hot spring baths)

Best for: an hour in a hinoki or stone private bath of the Amaharashi spring, on the coast where the Tateyama range rises across the bay

Two private baths, each 60 minutes for ¥2,750 including tax, six slots a day from the middle of the afternoon to 11:30 p.m., booked ahead or on the day if a slot is free; both use circulating filtration and can be entered in a wheelchair. Every room bath is a unit bath or shower booth, and the rooms page says they are not hot spring water. The FAQ refuses bath-only day visits with an apology and no exceptions.
