Does Kotan Ureshino allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Eighteen rooms opened under the Goten Resort name, built around silence and a pair of iki stoves, with the guest sauna repeated in miniature inside the best rooms. Nobody under middle-school age stays here.

No tattoo rule is published. Most of the eighteen rooms answer the question anyway: they come with a stone garden semi-open-air bath on the spring, and four of those also have a private sauna. Two Retreat Twin rooms have only a hot spring shower and no tub, so check the room type. There is a rentable private bath as well.

Hakata to Ibusuki is about 3 h 25: the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo, then the Ibusuki Makurazaki line down the coast, which the sightseeing train Ibusuki no Tamatebako also runs. Ureshino is about 1 h 20, a limited express to Takeo-Onsen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen one stop further. Kurokawa has no railway at all: the coach from Hakata takes about 2 h 40 by way of Hita and Tsuetate. The blue dashes are the way here from Hakata Bus Terminal: the Kyushu-go coach, which stops in the middle of the bath district rather than at the station two kilometers out, 2 h 12 in all; 2,200 yen against 4,870 by train, and eleven minutes slower; one run of the day stops at the expressway interchange instead, a 26-minute walk out. Skip the shared baths and reserve the private one the way this page describes. Once the door is closed, the bath is yours.

Best for: A room with both a hot spring bath and a sauna in it, at a house that takes no children

Eighteen rooms, all non-smoking, guests must be of middle-school age or older. The top rooms, Imperial Sauna Terrace Suite Aoi and Executive Sauna Suite Akatsuki, have both bath and sauna and access to a premium lounge. Shared baths are open 15:00–24:00 and 06:00–10:30, with a self-loyly sauna at 80°C, a cold bath and an outdoor cooling space, swapped between men and women morning and evening. The hotel describes the water as a sodium bicarbonate spring. Transfers from Ureshino-Onsen STN are available.
