Taishoya

大正屋

Does Taishoya allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

The house that turned a hundred in the middle of the onsen street, built so that the noise of the town does not reach the cedar garden the detached rooms look onto. Its own well comes out near boiling and runs to four different baths across two hotels.

No rule is published for the two shared baths, Shiki-no-yu and Taki-no-yu. The reason to come anyway is that Taishoya pipes its own source into the guest rooms: the main-building tatami rooms say so outright, the detached rooms have hinoki tubs on the same water, and the Toukan suite Shokintei has a hinoki indoor bath and an open-air one. Ask which type you are booked into before you arrive.

Hakata to Ibusuki is about 3 h 25: the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo, then the Ibusuki Makurazaki line down the coast, which the sightseeing train Ibusuki no Tamatebako also runs. Ureshino is about 1 h 20, a limited express to Takeo-Onsen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen one stop further. Kurokawa has no railway at all: the coach from Hakata takes about 2 h 40 by way of Hita and Tsuetate. The blue dashes are the way here from Hakata Bus Terminal: the Kyushu-go coach, which stops in the middle of the bath district rather than at the station two kilometers out, 2 h 12 in all; 2,200 yen against 4,870 by train, and eleven minutes slower; one run of the day stops at the expressway interchange instead, a 26-minute walk out. What happens when you arrive

Skip the shared baths and reserve the private one the way this page describes. Once the door is closed, the bath is yours.

How we know

Confirmed from official site — bath structure, not a tattoo policy (the room pages for the detached, east and main wings)

Read on: taishoya.com/taishoya/rooms/

Best for: Bathing in the inn’s own 85 to 95 degree source without leaving the room

Shiki-no-yu takes day visitors 12:00–23:00 at 1,300 yen for adults and 600 for elementary-school children; Taki-no-yu, which has a mist sauna fed by spring heat, is for guests only and closes 12:00–15:00 for cleaning. Guests of either Taishoya or its sister Shiibasanso may use all four baths across the two houses, with a free car between them every half hour from 16:00 to 19:30. Source named 嬉野温泉 大正屋源泉, listed as ナトリウム一炭酸水素塩・塩化物泉(低張性弱アルカリ性高温泉), 85 to 95°C, and drinkable. Detached wing 20 rooms, east wing 7 plus the suite, main building 25 tatami rooms and more.
