Does Onyado Takasago allow tattoos? In a private bath

A quiet river inn with an irori salon, a lending library and a foot bath on the terrace, where the bathing is spread over four places in the building and the one you rent costs nothing.

Takasago publishes no tattoo rule for Tono-no-yu and Hime-no-yu, its two shared baths. It does keep a rentable bath in the annex that guests use free of charge by asking at the front desk, and five rooms with their own spring-fed tub. Note that the cheapest rooms have no bath, so the room type decides the answer.

Where it is

Hakata to Ibusuki is about 3 h 25: the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo, then the Ibusuki Makurazaki line down the coast, which the sightseeing train Ibusuki no Tamatebako also runs. Ureshino is about 1 h 20, a limited express to Takeo-Onsen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen one stop further. Kurokawa has no railway at all: the coach from Hakata takes about 2 h 40 by way of Hita and Tsuetate. The blue dashes are the way here from Hakata Bus Terminal: the Kyushu-go coach, which stops in the middle of the bath district rather than at the station two kilometers out, 2 h 12 in all; 2,200 yen against 4,870 by train, and eleven minutes slower; one run of the day stops at the expressway interchange instead, a 26-minute walk out. Best for: A free private bath booked at the desk, in a small inn that still keeps an old-style reception counter

Room baths: Suzaku has a hinoki open-air bath onto a terrace over the river, Fujitsubo has a reclining open-air bath plus a stone indoor bath, and Kiritsubo, Yume-no-Ukihashi and Hanachirusato have stone indoor baths where the shower and washbasin taps run on the source too. The rented bath is free for guests from 15:00, last booking 22:00, subject to availability. Shared baths 15:00–23:00 and 06:00–09:30; the men’s is open-air only. An irori salon with free coffee, a foot bath and a river terrace are open to guests. Prices for the rented bath changed in November 2025.
