A 2024 build dropped into the middle of the old post-town street, taking its name from the roji, the path to a tea room, and keeping the street open through it as a garden with a chocolaterie at the front.

Opened in 2024 with no tattoo rule on any of its pages. Three of the four room grades have their own hot spring: the two premium rooms, Asatsuyu and Yabukita, each with a private open-air bath on 100 percent natural spring water, and the superior grade with an indoor one. Only the standard room sends you to the shared bath, which has an indoor tub, an open-air tub and a sauna.

Where it is

Hakata to Ibusuki is about 3 h 25: the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo, then the Ibusuki Makurazaki line down the coast, which the sightseeing train Ibusuki no Tamatebako also runs. Ureshino is about 1 h 20, a limited express to Takeo-Onsen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen one stop further. Kurokawa has no railway at all: the coach from Hakata takes about 2 h 40 by way of Hita and Tsuetate. The blue dashes are the way here from Hakata Bus Terminal: the Kyushu-go coach, which stops in the middle of the bath district rather than at the station two kilometers out, 2 h 12 in all; 2,200 yen against 4,870 by train, and eleven minutes slower; one run of the day stops at the expressway interchange instead, a 26-minute walk out. Best for: A 50 square metre corner room with its own open-air bath over the main street

Four room types, all non-smoking, sleeping one or two. Asatsuyu and Yabukita are 50 square meters with an open-air bath, twin double beds and a 120-inch projector; the superior is 30 square meters with an indoor spring bath. The shared bath carries the name Takeya, after the inn that used to stand on the site. Dinner is a French and Japanese kaiseki supervised by the chef from Ryokan Yoshidaya, which owns this house. A chocolate shop and a foot bath are attached. The hotel puts itself three minutes by car from Ureshino-Onsen STN, or about eight minutes by JR bus to Youth Sports Entrance plus two on foot.
