Does Hanabeppu allow tattoos? In a private bath
Six minutes from the west exit of Beppu Station, a bamboo-and-camellia inn run by JR Kyushu with one bookable family bath called Egao on the ground floor.
One family bath, named Egao, sits on the first floor beside the two large baths, and it is the only water here you do not share. The hotel’s own hot spring page prices it at 2,200 yen for 50 minutes and marks it 御予約制, so you reserve rather than wait for a free lamp. Hours are 15:00 to 22:00 with the last start at 21:00. Guest rooms have ordinary bathrooms, and the hotel does not describe any room tub as hot spring water, so the family bath is the plan.

The bath
Egao is the only water here you do not share. It sits on the ground floor beside the two large baths, and it is booked rather than waited for: 15:00 to 22:00 with the last start at 21:00, 2,200 yen for fifty minutes. Guest rooms have ordinary bathrooms and the hotel does not call any of them hot spring water, so those fifty minutes are the plan for the stay.
The spring is a sodium bicarbonate water and it runs free-flowing. Both large baths are floored in tatami rather than tile, and neither swaps sex overnight, so the side you get is the side you have. Otohime, for women, has an indoor bath, an outdoor one, a micro-bubble bath whose water goes milky with fine air, and a mist sauna tiled in a bamboo and camellia mosaic. Momotaro, for men, is the more compact of the two, with an indoor and an outdoor bath and no sauna. Both open 15:00 to 01:00 and 05:00 to 10:00, with an extra hour from 14:00 for anyone staying a second night.
Booking sites advertise one free fifty-minute turn in the family bath per stay; the hotel’s own page carries only the 2,200-yen price, so check what your plan actually includes.
The hotel
JR Kyushu runs it, six minutes from the west exit of Beppu Station with Beppu Park and its bamboo next door. The hotel reopened after a refit on 6 March 2026 with an all-inclusive lounge, and the bamboo and camellia of the name turn up through the building, down to the sauna tiles.
What is good about it
- One family bath, and it is reserved, fifty minutes at 2,200 yen, last start 21:00.
- Tatami floors in both large baths, and no swap between the men’s and women’s sides overnight.
- An extra hour on a second night, the baths open at 14:00 for guests staying consecutive nights.
