Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Beppu Seifu
大江戸温泉物語 別府清風
Does Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Beppu Seifu allow tattoos? Yes, covered
A big buffet hotel on the seafront where the draw is the open-air bath looking out over the water and the crab at dinner. The Ooedo group runs it on the pay-one-price model, day visits included.
The house rule is a refusal with one exception, and the exception is the hotel’s own cover seal. Its day-use page states that tattooed guests may not use the large bath unless the tattoo is completely covered by a seal the hotel sells. Buy it at the front desk before you go up; a tattoo that the seal cannot fully hide is not admitted.

The bath
The indoor bath is on the third floor of the main building, a wide room with the sea in its windows, and the view open-air bath above it is what people book for: nothing between the tub and Beppu Bay, ships working into port by day, the lights of Oita across the water at night, the sun coming up out of the horizon if you bathe early. The hotel is plain about the water, a sodium and calcium chloride and bicarbonate spring, with water added, heating and filtered recirculation.
Guests bathe 15:00 to 24:00 and again 05:00 to 10:00. Day visitors buy the bath with the dinner buffet: bathing 15:00 to 24:00 with last entry at 22:00, dinner 17:00 to 21:30, from 3,600 yen on a weekday, 4,300 at the weekend and 6,200 on peak dates, face and bath towels included and bathing tax charged on top. The cover seal is bought at the front desk and has to hide the tattoo completely; neither its size nor its price is published. The open-air bath can be shut in bad weather.
The hotel
A large pay-one-price seafront hotel run on the Ooedo model, with a Kyushu buffet at both ends of the day, a rack of yukata to choose your own from, and karaoke, table tennis and a manga corner for the evening. Snow crab plans run in season, one with the crab steamed as a course and one all you can eat.
What is good about it
- An open-air tub facing the bay, and a 05:00 opening for the sunrise over the water.
- Day use is bath plus dinner buffet, from 3,600 yen on a weekday, last entry to the bath at 22:00.
- The seal is sold at the front desk, with neither size nor price published, so settle it on arrival.
