Does Oniyama Hotel allow tattoos? In a private bath
Only one room type here, the barrier-free Yuraku, pipes the 98-degree Oniyama Jigoku source into a tub you can use at three in the morning. The hotel says outright that the baths in its other rooms are not spring water.
One room type answers the question and the rest do not. Yuraku, five barrier-free rooms of 55 square meters on the third floor, has a hot spring bath in the room running free-flowing from the source around the clock. The hotel is unusually blunt that the tubs in its other rooms are not hot spring water, and it closed its family and private baths in March 2024, so there is no reservable alternative. Book Yuraku or you are down to the large baths, for which the hotel publishes no tattoo rule.

The bath
Yuraku is the room type that settles the question: five barrier-free rooms of 55 square meters on the third floor, each with a hot spring bath running free from the source at any hour, and an automatic door at the entrance. Two of the five have electric beds, and the hotel keeps a bath wheelchair and a mat for getting into the tub. The source is the Oniyama Jigoku next door, a chloride spring at 98°C, and the hotel puts its metasilicic acid at 423 mg.
Read the room type rather than the hotel name. The seventh-floor special rooms and the 18.5-square-meter Japanese rooms both carry a line saying the bath in the room is not spring water, and the standard Japanese rooms have a shower and nothing else. There is no fallback: the rented family baths closed in March 2024, and the Sora-no-yu view bath went with them.
The two large baths are on the first floor, Oniyama-no-yu for women and Kuberi-no-yu for men, each with an indoor tub and an open-air one, open 15:00 to 24:00 and 05:00 to 10:00.
The hotel
Opened in 1964, refitted in February 2025, and a minute from the Jigoku Meguri circuit, so the ground floor sees a lot of day traffic. The kitchen steams its jigoku-mushi courses in the Oniyama source. Modern Premier rooms and a wider Japanese-modern room came out of the 2025 work, there are eight banquet rooms, and dinner is served in the room for up to six on the plans that say so.

Getting there
In Kannawa beside Shiraike Jigoku, 4.7 km from the station: about fifteen minutes by taxi from JR Beppu STN, or five minutes by car from the Beppu interchange. Buses to Kannawa stop a few minutes away on foot.

Two of the five Yuraku rooms have electric beds, and the hotel keeps a bath wheelchair and a tub mat. The FAQ states 貸切風呂、家族風呂はございません and dates the closure to March 2024, along with the Sora-no-yu view bath.
