Ekimae Honmachi, a minute from Beppu Station Hotel with a top-floor onsen and seven private baths

Does Beppu Hatto Onyado Nono Beppu allow tattoos? Yes, covered

Cover seal required

A Dormy Inn built as a ryokan, floored in tatami from the lobby up, with the baths put on the thirteenth floor over Beppu Bay. The seven private tubs on the same floor are named for Kannawa, Myoban, Shibaseki, Hamawaki, Horita, Kamegawa and Kankaiji.

The hotel refuses tattooed bathers in the shared bath unless the tattoo is covered, and it supplies the cover. Its own bath page sets out the rule and the size of the sticker it hands over, 8 by 10 centimeters, so anything larger than a palm will not pass. Seven private baths are taken first come, first served, about 45 minutes at a time, which is the way around it.

The bath

The bath is on the thirteenth floor and runs on the hotel’s own source. Indoors there is a hot tub; beside it two pot baths, one a kama and one cut from hinoki; then an open-air bath along the edge of the building with the bay below it. The sauna is self-loyly with a television, the cold bath is chilled, and reclining chairs are set out both inside the room and outside in the air, five of them on the men’s side.

The seven private baths are on the same floor and are taken first come, first served, about forty-five minutes a turn. Five are open-air and two indoor, and two of the seven, the ones named Horita and Myoban, are silky baths rather than hot spring water. The other five are the spring.

Open 15:00 to 10:00 the following morning, with the sauna out of use from 01:00 to 05:00. The cover seal the hotel hands out measures 8×10 cm, and its own wording says seals are stocked at some properties rather than all, so settle it at the desk when you check in.

The hotel

A Dormy Inn built to ryokan manners: tatami from the lobby up, so your shoes come off at the entrance, and Serta mattresses in every room. Rooms run from a 17.6-square-meter double through queen, twin, triple and family sizes to a 28.9-square-meter universal twin, with one 70-square-meter suite that has a sauna and an open-air bath of its own. Breakfast is the chain buffet, small-dish yokocho and eggs cooked to order, with eight Oita dishes alongside it including kaisen-don, toriten and nigui.

A chain rule, with the largest seals of any chain — when they are in stock

Onyado Nono is Dormy Inn’s ryokan-styled brand, and its FAQ page gives the chain’s answer word for word: refused in principle, but a tattoo that a cover seal hides completely may bathe. The whole picture on Onyado Nono, and every Onyado Nono listing on this site →

Best for: Seven private tubs named for the hot spring districts, taken in turn without booking

Thirteenth-floor bath open 15:00–10:00 the next morning, sauna closed 01:00–05:00. Indoor tub, two pot baths, an open-air bath, self-service loyly sauna and a cold bath. The seven private baths run about 45 minutes a turn. Tatami floors throughout the hotel, so shoes come off at the entrance. The wording says seals are available at some properties, so confirm at the desk when you check in.
