Horita, on the road up toward Yufuin Day-use public bathhouse, city-run, with an open-air bath

Horita Onsen

堀田温泉

Does Horita Onsen allow tattoos? Yes!

Nothing to cover

The staging post on the old road to Yufuin and Hita, rebuilt in 2003 as the municipal bath for the Horita district. It is the city bath with a proper open-air tub, planted and walled in rock.

Horita is the municipal bath for its district, and the city marks it tattoo-friendly in the facility data it maintains itself. The 2026 map the city publishes for tattooed visitors lists it among the shared baths, not the private ones. That applies to the indoor tub and the garden bath outside.

The bath

The water is a simple spring brought down from the Horita source and run through without recirculation, and the reason to come this far up the hill is the tub outside. It is walled and floored in set rock with planting around it that changes through the year, which no other 300-yen bath in the city has. Inside there is a plain indoor tub and a rest room to sit in afterward.

The 2003 building was the first municipal bath in Beppu to get an ostomate-accessible toilet, and it has a ramp, level floors throughout, rails on the tub and in the changing room, and a bathing wheelchair to transfer into.

Open 06:30 to 22:30, closed 14:00 to 15:00 for cleaning and on the first Wednesday. Adults 300 yen, children 100, and the ten-ticket book at 2,700 yen works here and nowhere else. A soap, shampoo and rinse set is 100 yen, the dryer is free, and there are about thirty spaces in the car park.
