Does Shibai no Yu allow tattoos? Yes!
The bath shares a roof with a community hall that doubles as a theater, which is where the name comes from. It sits high enough on the hill that the window over the tub gives you a garden rather than a wall.
A city facility, and the city’s own onsen site prints the tattoo answer in the information block for this bath. Beppu’s 2026 tattoo map lists it among the public baths as well. The city’s tourism listing carries no tattoo attribute, so the enjoyONSEN page is the one to go by.
The bath
The ceiling over the water is open to the second floor, so there is twice the height above you that a 300-yen bath usually runs to, and the window at the end faces the garden instead of a wall. Beside the wide hot tub is a smaller, slightly cooler one with an utaseyu falling into it, which you stand under to take the weight off your shoulders. The water is a simple spring, piped in and run through. Stairs lead down from the entrance to the two sides, marked in English as well as Japanese, and there is a rest area by the door with another upstairs.
Open 11:00 to 21:00 with last reception at 20:30, closed Tuesdays. Adults 300 yen, children 100; a ten-ticket book is 2,700 yen. The building it shares runs a real stage with numbered seats, so on performance days it is busy with people who have not come to bathe.
What is good about it
- A ceiling open to the second floor, and a window over the tub that gives you the garden.
- An utaseyu into the cooler tub, to stand under after the hot one.
- Open 11:00 to 21:00, closed Tuesdays, with the last reception at 20:30, which is early for Beppu.
Getting there
Up the hill at Ueno-guchi, about twenty minutes on foot from JR Beppu STN, or take the bus toward Noguchibaru from the station’s west exit and get off at the community center.
