Does Tano-yu Onsen allow tattoos? Yes!
Once surrounded by rice fields, which is where the name comes from, and known locally as the bath with no paths between the paddies. It is small, plain and entirely unbothered by visitors.
The city lists this one as a bath where tattoos are fine, on the tourism site it publishes itself, with the entry dated to June 2026. Beppu City is also the operator here, so that listing is the operator speaking. The city’s 2026 tattoo map puts Tano-yu among the baths open to tattooed bathers in the shared tub.
The bath
One room, one tub, filled from the source with a sodium, magnesium and calcium bicarbonate spring. There is a ramp at the door, no step behind it and grab rails on the tub, and that is the whole of the equipment: no showers, no sauna, no rest area. Whatever you failed to bring is on sale at the counter: a bar of soap for 150 yen, a razor for 50, a towel for 300. The basin is lent for nothing.
Open 06:30 to 22:30, with the hour from 14:00 to 15:00 kept for cleaning, closed the first Tuesday. Adults 200 yen, children 100. A ten-ticket book costs 1,800 yen and is good here, at Hamawaki, at Nagaishi and at Hamada. There is no car park at all.

Getting there
About five minutes on foot from JR Beppu STN, in the back streets west of the tracks around Tanoyu-machi. Walk or take the bus, because there is nowhere to leave a car.
