Does Furosen allow tattoos? Yes!
A bathhouse on this spot since the Meiji era, rebuilt in 2014 with the largest tub the city owns and a ramp at the door. The name means the spring of agelessness, which is the sort of thing a Meiji bathhouse promised.
Beppu City runs it, and the city’s own page for the bath ends with a one-line tattoo verdict in the plain. Its tourism listing for Furosen carries the same tattoo mark. Nobody will ask you to cover anything.
The bath
The tub is the widest the city owns and it is divided into a hot half and a cool one, so the room reads as one long pool rather than two. The city asks you not to swim in it, which tells you the scale. The water is a simple spring, free-flowing.
The 2014 rebuild is what to know if steps are a problem. There is a ramp at the entrance, no level change between the door and the tub, handrails the whole way for wet floors, an elevator fitted for visually impaired visitors and two wheelchairs kept in the building. The second floor holds a wooden-floored meeting room the neighborhood books for its own use.
The city says the bath fills up from the afternoon until closing and recommends the early hours instead, when the water is at its freshest. Open 06:30 to 22:30, closed 14:00 to 15:00 for cleaning and on the first Monday. Adults 250 yen, children 100, and a ten-ticket book at 2,250 yen also works at Kaimon-ji and Kiyosen. Nine parking spaces.

Five minutes on foot from JR Beppu STN, in Chuo-machi just behind the station approach and the covered shopping streets.
