HAKODATE Kaikyo no Kaze
HAKODATE海峡の風
Does HAKODATE Kaikyo no Kaze allow tattoos? In a private bath
The hotel publishes no tattoo policy, so book one of its 28 rooms with a hot-spring view bath of your own. Guests can also rent the private baths at Takubokutei, the sister hotel next door.
Neither the hotel’s own two large baths nor its FAQ carry a tattoo rule.
The bath
Twenty-eight of the 56 rooms have a view bath filled with hot-spring water: 14 on the classic Taisho Roman floors and 14 on the Heisei Modern floors. The rest of the rooms have no hot-spring bath.
Guests can also use the private baths at Takubokutei, which shares the site. They come in two styles, Heisei Modern and Showa Retro, and each has a lounge with a TV and a free massage chair. They cost ¥3,300 for 50 minutes and are open 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., last entry 10 p.m. They’re for staying guests only.
The spring comes out at 63.7°C (146.7°F), salty and warming. The two large baths are Yume-no-yu, a Taisho-style room with stained glass, bronze taps, a dry sauna and an ice sauna, and Relax21, a bright modern room with a standing bath, jar tubs and an herbal bath. They’re open 3 p.m. to 11 a.m., closed 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. for cleaning, when the men’s and women’s sides swap. Guests may also use Isaribi, Takubokutei’s rooftop open-air bath. These are shared baths with no published tattoo rule. Bring the towels from your room.
The hotel
The hotel has 56 rooms of about 60 square meters each, twins for two and Japanese-Western rooms for four, all non-smoking. Check-in is 3 p.m., and checkout is 11 a.m. Seikan Ichiba, the buffet restaurant, opens for dinner at 6 p.m.; there are no meals in the room. Parking is free, with about 120 spaces shared with Takubokutei.
