Tattoo friendly onsen in Hakodate and Yunokawa

The city answers the question in writing and Yunokawa answers it with plumbing. HOTEL & SPA Century Marina Hakodate dropped its refusal on 1 April 2020 and now takes any tattoo that two of its own 15 by 10 centimeter cover seals will hide, the widest allowance this guide has recorded from one hotel. The two Route Inn Grantia houses, by the station and at Goryokaku, run on the group rule instead. Down at the bay warehouses, La Vista Hakodate Bay ANNEX keeps three free private tubs open all night. Out at Yunokawa not one operator publishes a permission, so the listings there are rooms with the spring already in them.

HOTEL & SPA Century Marina Hakodate

センチュリーマリーナ函館

Cover it and you are in. The hotel stopped refusing tattooed guests on 1 April 2020 and published a notice, in Japanese and English, saying so: anything that fits under at most two of the hotel’s own 15 by 10 centimeter cover seals is welcome in the bath. The seals are sold at the front desk rather than given out, so buy them when you check in. That is the largest seal allowance the guide has recorded from any single hotel.

当ホテル指定のカバーシール15cm×10cm2枚までで覆えるサイズ

Best for: A large tattoo that will not fit under a business-hotel seal, and an infinity tub over the harbor

The notice explains the change in its own words: the hotel had refused tattooed bathers as a rule, then took account of fashion tattoos among younger Japanese and of one-point tattoos as identity among foreign visitors. Its English line reads that people with tattoos must hide them with up to two sheets of the 15cm x 10cm cover seals the hotel specifies, and that seals are provided for a price at the front desk. Spa Stella on the fourteenth floor, 05:30 to 24:30, sodium chloride strong saline; men get a mid-temperature loyly sauna, women an aroma mist salt sauna. Stella Deck, the infinity open-air bath, is on the fifteenth, same hours. The lounge upstairs runs 18:00 to 23:00.

ルートイングランティア函館駅前

Cover the tattoo completely and the bath is open. Route Inn Hotels states the rule once for the whole group, Grantia included, and this property publishes no exception: tattoos are refused, except where a cover seal hides them entirely. The bath page itself says nothing about tattoos either way, so the rule you are relying on is the group’s.

入れ墨(タトゥー)のある方のご入浴はお断りしております。ただし、カバーシールを用いて入れ墨(タトゥー)が完全に覆えている場合に限り、大浴場をご利用いただけます。

Best for: A real hot spring on the thirteenth floor, three minutes from the station, at business-hotel money

The group FAQ as read on 2026-09-18 states the rule but not a seal size, and does not say whether seals are sold on site; ask at the desk. Tabibito-no-yu is on the thirteenth floor, 15:00 to 02:00 and 05:00 to 10:00, on a chloride spring the hotel calls a warming bath. Guests only, no day use: 旅人の湯はご宿泊のお客様限定でご利用いただけます。 Breakfast is free when you book through the hotel’s own site.

ルートイングランティア函館五稜郭

Same rule as its sister by the station, because it is the same group: refused unless a cover seal hides the tattoo completely. Nothing on this property’s own pages narrows or widens that. The bath is on the top floor, the fourteenth, with a relaxation room of massage chairs beside it.

Bath 15:00 to 02:00 and 05:00 to 10:00 on the fourteenth floor, with massage chairs and foot machines in the room next to it. Breakfast is free when booked through the hotel’s own site. About 3.5 km from Hakodate Station, roughly fifteen minutes by streetcar.

湯の川プリンスホテル渚亭

Book one of the 120 rooms with its own open-air bath and the shared bath never comes into it. The hotel’s own FAQ says the room tubs can be used at any point during the stay, and its bath page counts them out by type: 74 rock tubs and 18 cypress tubs on the sea side, 28 rock tubs facing Mount Hakodate. Nothing on the site addresses tattoos in the men’s and women’s bath, so treat that bath as unanswered rather than open.

客室の露天風呂はいつでも入浴できますか? 滞在中はいつでも入浴できます。

Best for: A tub on your own balcony set level with the floor, so the strait fills the whole view from the water

Room tubs: rock (94 rooms, wide enough for two adults), cypress (18 rooms, one adult, all sea side), and rock with a foot bath attached (8 rooms, all Mount Hakodate side). The hotel says the water is 源泉100%です。加水、加温等は行っておりません and gives the spring as sodium and calcium chloride. No family bath: 家族風呂はございません. No day-use bathing, deliberately, so the baths stay with overnight guests. Shared bath 15:00 to 10:00, sauna 15:00 to 24:00 and 07:00 to 10:00. Indoor heated pool free to guests, 15:00 to 22:00. School groups are turned away because so many rooms have tubs.

Hanabishi Hotel

花びしホテル

The answer here is a room with its own open-air tub on the hotel’s own spring. Every ground-floor room in the Suehirotei wing has one, the barrier-free room has one, and the Gagyutei suites that opened in May 2026 have one. The hotel publishes no tattoo rule anywhere on its site, and its FAQ says flatly that there is no rentable private bath, so the room tub is the only door that closes behind you.

貸切風呂、家族風呂はございません。

Best for: A spring-fed tub of your own on the ground floor, a few steps from the garden bath you can skip

The operator describes the Suehirotei ground-floor tubs as 源泉掛け流しの専用露天風呂 and the Gagyutei suite tubs as fed from the source. Shared baths, for anyone who wants them: Hishi-no-yu and Hana-no-yu on the first floor, with two and three garden open-air tubs, and Gagyu-no-yu on the seventh with city views, all 15:00 to 25:00 and 05:00 to 10:00. Auto-loyly Finnish sauna at about 92°C, 15:00 to 23:00 and 06:00 to 09:30, with an outdoor cold tub. Spring is ナトリウム・カルシウム-塩化物温泉.

Rent one of the two private baths and the question goes away for fifty minutes. The hotel sells them at 3,300 yen a session, 13:00 to 23:00 with last entry at 22:00, in a Heisei-modern room and a Showa-retro room, each with a television and a massage chair. The eleventh-floor sky bath is a different matter: the hotel answers the tattoo question nowhere on its own site, and its published answer elsewhere is no, so do not plan on it.

Best for: Fifty locked minutes with a massage chair, under a hotel whose shared bath is off the table

The two shared baths are the eleventh-floor 空中大浴殿 雲海, behind 30 meters of glass over the city, and the 空中露天風呂 いさりび, which looks out at the squid boats. Both run 13:00 to 10:00, closed 01:00 to 01:30 and 03:00 to 03:30 for cleaning; sauna 14:00 to 24:00 and 06:00 to 09:00. Day use 1,200 yen for adults and 600 for children, 06:00 to 09:00 and 13:00 to 21:00, and there is a monthly day-use pass at 11,260 yen. Two rooms at Wakamatsu have a bath of their own, and they are the only tattoo-proof way in. The maisonette rooms in the Nanbo wing are the house’s only rooms with a view bath, and the Honkan special room Yachiyo has a cypress indoor tub. The ryokan publishes no tattoo rule and rents no private bath, and it does not say whether the room tubs carry the house spring, so read them as tubs rather than as onsen.

若松唯一の展望風呂を備えた和洋室

Best for: A two-story room with a bath upstairs, in a house that has been drawing its own water since 1922

Two maisonette rooms, about 110 square meters each, Japanese room downstairs and beds upstairs. Yachiyo, one room of about 90 square meters, recreates the suite the Showa emperor used in 1954 and has a cypress indoor bath. The shared baths are Hana-no-yu for women in cypress and Tsuki-no-yu for men in granite, plus a marble open-air bath over the strait, 05:00 to 10:00 and 15:00 to 24:00. The house spring runs at 57.6°C from a well under the pavilion by the entrance, and the bath page gives it as 湯の川温泉(加水)、温泉掛け流し. Hakodate introduced an accommodation tax on 1 April 2026 and the ryokan bills it on top of the room rate.

Traveler’s note

Yunokawa prints refusals rather than permissions. Hotel Banso, Hotel Amamiyakan and Yunokawa Kanko Hotel Shoen all turn tattooed bathers away, and Shoen’s bar covers its sixth-floor rentable bath too. In the city, Hakodate Yumoto Hana no Yu refuses admission at the door, and Yunohako Komichi names cover seals inside its ban. Yachigashira Onsen, the 1953 bathhouse under Mount Hakodate, publishes nothing at all. Kappo Ryokan Wakamatsu does not say whether its two room tubs carry the house spring.

Common questions

Hakodate and Yunokawa questions

Can I use a shared bath in Hakodate or Yunokawa with a tattoo?

At three hotels, covered. Century Marina Hakodate admits anything two of its 15 by 10 centimeter seals will hide, and sells the seals at the front desk rather than handing them out. Route Inn Grantia Hakodate Ekimae and Route Inn Grantia Hakodate Goryokaku follow the group rule, which asks only that the cover be complete and names no size.

Which places here rent a bath I can lock?

La Vista Hakodate Bay ANNEX has three on the ninth floor, ceramic, brick and cypress, free, around the clock, with a lamp at the door and no reservation. Yumoto Takubokutei rents two bathrooms at 3,300 yen for fifty minutes, and KKR Hakodate lets its family bath by the hour for 1,000 yen.

Which Yunokawa hotels put the spring in the room?

Yunokawa Prince Hotel Nagisatei has 120 rooms with a tub on the balcony, set level with the floor so the strait fills the view. Hanabishi Hotel gives every ground-floor room in its Suehirotei wing a source-fed open-air tub, Yunohama Hotel pipes the spring into its Tokaitei rooms, and Bourou Noguchi Hakodate puts a view bath in its Suite and Wamodern rooms.

How do I get to Hakodate from Sapporo?

The Hokuto limited express covers Sapporo to Hakodate in 3 h 50 with no change. For Yunokawa, cross to Hakodate-Ekimae outside the station and ride tram line 5 to Yunokawaonsen, 39 minutes door to door for 290 yen. From Tokyo it is 4 h 29 on the Hayabusa, changing at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto onto the Hakodate Liner.
