Does Fuji-Hakone Guest House allow tattoos? In a private bath
Tattoos are no problem here, because every bath is taken privately behind a locked door. The guesthouse says so on its own English page.

The bath
The water is Owakudani spring, piped straight from the volcano and run through the tubs without recirculation (gensen kakenagashi, in the guesthouse's Japanese). It's cloudy white. The guesthouse warns that it corrodes silver and can discolor fabric, so take off all jewelry before getting in. The color and temperature shift a little from day to day because the spring is natural. There are two indoor baths and one outdoor bath, all taken privately. You bathe alone or with your own family or friends, and a couple or family can lock the door from inside. Guests use one of the two indoor baths, included in the room rate. The outdoor bath costs ¥500 per person. Day visitors to Hakone can book the private bath too, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at ¥1,500 per person per hour, with a towel for ¥300. Reserve by the day before.
The hotel
A small wooden building opened in 1984, mainly for foreign travelers. The rooms are plain tatami rooms with futons, heating and air conditioning, yukata (a light cotton robe) and towels. Toilets and washbasins are shared. The lounge has a microwave, toaster oven and piano, and the Hayakawa stream runs past the back garden.
Good to know
- Take off silver jewelry first. The Owakudani water corrodes it and can stain clothing.
- Private outdoor bath for ¥500, on top of the indoor bath included in the room.
- Dinner is out. No meals are served, and most nearby restaurants close at 8 p.m. Curfew is 11 p.m.
Getting there
The T-line bus leaves from lane 3, and the last one from Hakone-Yumoto is at 7:53 p.m. An English sign marks the corner.

T-line bus toward Togendai to Senkyoro-mae, about 30 minutes, then 1 minute on foot.
The Odakyu Hakone expressway bus from Busta Shinjuku stops at Senkyoro-mae too, about 2 hours.
Where it is
- Hakone Freepass from ¥7,100 · 2 or 3 days from Shinjuku Worth it if you’re coming from Shinjuku and moving around Hakone. It covers the Odakyu line from Shinjuku and back, then unlimited rides on the Hakone Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway, lake boats and buses. The Romancecar seat fee is extra.
