Does Izu Hotel Resort & Spa allow tattoos? In a private bath
Izu Hotel Resort & Spa gave all 26 rooms a spring-fed tub on a terrace high above Atagawa, then made its one shared bath something the rooms cannot offer: an open-air pool deep enough to stand in to the chest.
The hotel’s FAQ keeps tattoos out of the large bath and tells guests to use the spring bath in their room. All 26 rooms have a hot spring open-air bath on their own terrace, facing the Pacific and the Izu islands, so a tattooed guest can bathe without using the shared bath at all. The shared bath is a single deep open-air pool for each sex; ask the hotel before using it.
The bath
Every one of the 26 rooms has a hot spring open-air bath on its terrace, looking out over the Pacific and the Izu islands. What changes from type to type is the size of the room, the terrace and the tub. The Premier Terrace Twin is the suite of the house, with the widest terrace. Another type is sold on having the largest tub, and the hotel marks several of the less expensive types as having a smaller one, so read the room descriptions if the tub matters most to you. The photos show a dark stone tub set flush into the terrace, full to the rim, with a slatted timber screen on one side.
Because the rooms already have ordinary spring baths, the hotel built its shared bath to be different. It is open-air only and 125 cm deep on both the men's and women's sides, so you stand in it up to the chest with the horizon straight ahead. It opens from 6 to 11 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to midnight. The men's side has a single shower and no washing stations, and the hotel asks men to wash in their room first; the women's side has washing stations.
The hotel
A 26-room hotel on a hilltop in the Atagawa highlands, inside the Resort Park Izu Atagawa estate, which describes itself as a small premium resort. Rooms have Simmons beds, a sofa, a terrace with chairs and free Wi-Fi. There is a spa with online booking and a cafe terrace. Smoking is banned everywhere on the grounds, indoors and out, including the room terraces and including e-cigarettes, except at the set smoking place. Parking for 48 cars is outdoors, free, and needs no reservation.
Good to know
- Check the tub size before you book; the hotel says which room types have the smaller ones.
- Men wash in the room, because the men's deep bath has one shower and no washing stations.
- No smoking on the terrace, or anywhere else on the property.
- Reserve the free shuttle, since a run with no bookings does not operate.
Getting there
Take the Odoriko limited express from Tokyo to Izu-Atagawa Station, or the Shinkansen to Atami and change to the Ito and Izukyu lines. From the station the hotel runs a free shuttle that takes about 15 minutes up to the hilltop. It runs only when reserved: phone ahead, or write the pickup time you want in the request box when booking online. The hotel is not within walking distance of the station.
Izu-Atagawa STN · Izukyu Line (Odoriko limited express from Tokyo)
Not walkable.
Free shuttle from the station, about 15 minutes, by reservation only.

How we know
Confirmed from official site (the inn’s own FAQ, opened from the questions button on its site, under the question on the large bath, for the refusal; its own bath and room pages for the private bathing)
入れ墨(刺青)、タトゥーがある方の大浴場のご利用はご遠慮いただいております。
This is the rule for the shared baths. It doesn’t apply to the private baths.
Best for: couples who want a terrace tub with a long sea view and are content never to see the shared bath
Tub size varies by room type and the hotel says so plainly: the Premier and some Deluxe terraces have the largest tubs, and several types are marked as having a smaller one. The shared bath is an open-air pool 125 cm deep, 6 to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to midnight; the men’s side has one shower and no washing stations, so the hotel asks guests to wash in their rooms. The whole property is non-smoking, terraces included.
