Tattoo friendly onsen in Higashi-Izu

Higashi-Izu is the stretch of Izu’s east coast between Ito and Shimoda, where steam rises from the wooden towers over Atagawa’s springs and Inatori sits on its fishing harbor. The Odoriko limited express from Tokyo stops at both. Hotel Cetus Royal and Atagawakan, both in Atagawa, let a tattoo in under a seal. Everywhere else the answer is a bath of your own, and this coast has plenty: free private baths at Umiusagi, Bousui, Gyokusui and Katasekan Hiina, six of them at Yubana Mankai, and an open-air tub on every room at Atagawa Suiko.

The hotel refuses tattooed guests in its shared baths as a rule, with one written exception: a tattoo hidden under a single 8 cm × 10 cm (3.1 × 3.9 in) cover seal is accepted. You bring the seal yourself, because the hotel does not supply one. Anything too large for one seal is turned away, and the pool refuses tattoos of any size, so larger work means booking one of the two private family baths at check-in.

Best for: travelers with one small tattoo who want a big rock pool of free-flowing spring water a short walk from the station

One seal only, brought from home. The large open-air bath is about 100 meters from the main building, has no soap or shampoo, and closes in heavy rain. The two private family baths, Nozomi-no-yu and Senri-no-yu, run 45 minutes a group and are booked at the front desk at check-in only; the page lists no fee. One top-floor room has its own free-flowing open-air tub and is sold by phone only. The pool page refuses tattoos regardless of size.

Inatori Ginsuiso

稲取銀水荘

The hotel refuses guests with tattoos in its large bath, open-air bath and pool, and adds that covering up does not change that: it asks guests not to use them wearing tattoo-style paint or stickers either. It has no private or family bath. The only way to bathe here with a tattoo is to book one of the suites with an open-air bath of its own, on the executive floors or among the luxury suites.

恐れ入りますが、刺青・タトゥーのある方の大浴場(露天風呂)やプールの利用はお断りしています。また、刺青・タトゥーを模したペイントやシール等を施した状態での利用もご遠慮ください。

Best for: travelers set on this well-known house who will take a suite and bathe only in the room

No private bath and no family bath; the FAQ says so directly. Rooms with an open-air bath: the Gin-no-Shiori executive-floor suites on the ninth and tenth floors, 54 to 135 square meters, and the luxury suites on the fourth to sixth floors, about 72 to 113 square meters. The rooms page does not say what water fills those tubs. Covering a tattoo does not open the shared baths.

Itoen Hotel Inatori

伊東園ホテル稲取

The hotel’s hot spring page refuses bathers with tattoos, and the Itoen chain’s FAQ on the same site tells tattooed guests to use a private bath or the bath in the room instead of the large bath and open-air bath. The private bath here is a small open-air stone tub among the trees, ¥1,650 for 50 minutes, reserved at the front desk on the day.

※刺青・タトゥーのある方の入浴をお断りいたします。 / 刺青・タトゥーなどを入れている方の、大浴場・露天風呂のご入浴は原則お断りしております。各部屋に備え付けのお風呂か、貸切風呂をご利用ください。

Best for: travelers on a tight budget who want a private stone tub in the green for under ¥2,000

Private open-air bath: 3 to 10:30 p.m. and 6 to 9:15 a.m., 50 minutes, ¥1,650, reservation required at the front desk on the day. The rooms page lists Japanese and Western rooms only, with no room baths described.

Miharuya

伊豆熱川 自家源泉 おもてなしの宿 みはるや

The inn publishes no tattoo rule. It has two private baths that cost nothing: an open-air rock bath, reserved for private use from 7:40 p.m. until 7 the next morning in 35-minute turns, and a detached bath called Hanare, 50 minutes by reservation. Several of its ten rooms also have a cypress half-open-air tub fed from the inn’s own spring.

Best for: rail travelers who want a free private bath one minute from the platform

Private open-air bath Nangoku Noten-buro: men only 3 to 6:30 p.m., women only 7 to 9:30 a.m., private by reservation from 7:40 p.m. to 7 a.m., 35 minutes free; ask at the front desk on the day, and turns are given in order of check-in. Private bath Hanare, a short way from the main building: 3 to 10 p.m. by reservation, 50 minutes free. The cypress room tubs take two adults and are adjusted with a tap. A steam bath heated by the spring costs ¥2,000 for 40 minutes.

Takami Hotel

たかみホテル

The hotel publishes no tattoo rule. Seven of its 14 rooms have their own open-air bath of free-flowing spring water. For the other rooms, the big view open-air bath turns private from 8 p.m. to midnight, free, in 30-minute turns arranged at check-in. Outside those hours that bath is mixed, with towels allowed, so it is not a place to count on.

Best for: couples who want dinner in the room and a spring-fed tub on their own balcony above the town

The view open-air bath holds about 20 people. Its day is split: mixed bathing until 6 p.m., women only from 6 to 8 p.m., private use from 8 p.m. to midnight, mixed again after midnight. Private turns are 30 minutes a group, free, requested at the front desk at check-in with no advance booking, and guests in rooms without a tub get priority. The indoor baths are separate for men and women and open around the clock.

Shinyu no Yado SAZANA

心湯の宿 SAZANA

The inn’s FAQ keeps tattoos out of the large bath and points to its private baths, which are paid and booked ahead. It has two private baths, a view bath at ¥1,000 plus tax for 40 minutes and an open-air bath with an indoor tub attached, and three room types with a spring-fed open-air tub. Guests may also use the big baths of the sister hotel Yuen 30 seconds away, but Yuen firmly refuses bathers with tattoos, so keep to the private baths and the room tubs.

Best for: couples who want a low-cost private view bath and a room tub filled from an Inatori source

Private view bath Umi-no-Shirabe: 40 minutes, ¥1,000 plus tax, reserved in order of request. Private open-air bath Yururuka has an open-air tub and an indoor tub, open 3 to 11 p.m. and 7 to 9 a.m. Room open-air tubs use the Inatori Kanko No. 3 source, which the inn describes as salty and clear. The sister hotel next door refuses tattoos in its baths.

Traveler’s note

Several of the big hotels here refuse tattoos in the shared bath in writing, seals included: Tsuruya Kisshotei, Inatori Ginsuiso, both Itoen hotels and Tokai Hotel Yuen among them. They are on this page for a private bath or a room with its own tub, and each listing says so. Ryugu no Tsukai sells a palm-size cover at its desk but its FAQ still words the answer as a refusal, so it is listed for its four private baths. Atagawa Prince Hotel refuses all bathing and is not listed. Kuroneiwaburo, the seaside open-air bath at Hokkawa, is closed after typhoon damage.

Common questions

Higashi-Izu questions

Can I use a shared bath in Higashi-Izu with a tattoo?

At Hotel Cetus Royal in Atagawa, if one cover seal hides it, and at Atagawakan, which asks you to cover a tattoo with a seal and names no size; bring your own to both. No other inn on this coast publishes a rule that lets tattoos into a shared bath, and several refuse in writing. Every other listing is for a private bath or a room with its own tub.

Which inns include a private bath for free?

Senoumi Bettei Umiusagi has four, Bousui has four gazebo baths, and Gyokusui and Katasekan Hiina include theirs with the stay. Yubana Mankai has six private baths and no shared hall at all, and at Isaribi even the large bath is used one party at a time.

Atagawa or Inatori?

Atagawa is a compact town under its steaming spring towers. Inatori is a fishing port with the larger seafront hotels. Hokkawa, between Atagawa and Okawa, is a handful of inns above the shore.

How do I get to Higashi-Izu?

From Tokyo, take the Odoriko limited express, about 2 hours 10 minutes to Izu-Atagawa or 2 hours 25 minutes to Izu-Inatori, with no change. Or take the Shinkansen to Atami, about 50 minutes, and local trains down the Ito and Izukyu lines.
