Takami Hotel
たかみホテル
Does Takami Hotel allow tattoos? In a private bath
Takami Hotel has only 14 rooms, and half of them come with an open-air tub fed straight from the hotel’s own 82.8°C spring. After 8 p.m. the big view bath over the town can be had privately for half an hour, free.
The hotel publishes no tattoo rule. Seven of its 14 rooms have their own open-air bath of free-flowing spring water. For the other rooms, the big view open-air bath turns private from 8 p.m. to midnight, free, in 30-minute turns arranged at check-in. Outside those hours that bath is mixed, with towels allowed, so it is not a place to count on.
The bath
Seven rooms have an open-air bath of their own, each a little different, all with the sea in front. The hotel says every bath in the building, room tubs included, runs on its own spring with nothing added and nothing reused. Guests in these rooms are given a small bottle of sake to drink in the tub.
The view open-air bath is the other private option. It is a large tub, room for about 20, looking down over the roofs of Atagawa to the ocean. From 8 p.m. to midnight it is let to one group at a time for 30 minutes at no charge, again with sake. You ask at the front desk when you check in; there is no booking ahead, and guests whose rooms have no tub go first. The rest of the day it is a mixed bath where a towel may be worn, apart from 6 to 8 p.m., when it is for women only.
The indoor baths are separate for men and women, look out to sea and never close. There is also a stone spa with five heated stone beds. The water is a sodium chloride and sulfate spring, alkaline, 82.8°C at the source. The front desk gives away powdered mineral crystals from the well, and guests may fill up to two 20-liter containers with spring water to take home.
The hotel
A 14-room ryokan that calls its site the best location in Atagawa, high above the hot spring town. Rooms are Japanese style for two to eight guests, each with bath, toilet and refrigerator. Dinner is served in the room and centers on shore cooking: local spiny lobster as sashimi and golden-eye snapper simmered whole. The building has a 60-mat banquet hall with a stage, a club, a shop and a game corner, and there is parking.
