Does Hanare Matsushimakaku allow tattoos? In a private bath

Ten suites, ten open-air tubs, one per room: the annex was rebuilt around the idea that you never have to share a bath or see a member of staff.

Every suite in this annex has its own open-air bath on its own terrace, so the shared-bath question never arises unless you choose to walk into the main building, where tattoos are refused. The rooms are large, 64 to 120 square meters, and the tubs are custom Shigaraki ware or hiba. Staff are told to stay out of the rooms, which suits a guest who would rather not explain anything.

Where it is

Sendai is the door to all of these. Akiu is 43 minutes on one bus from the station, with no change. Nyuto is the Komachi, JR’s Shinkansen across to Akita, as far as Tazawako, then a bus of 47 minutes, about 2 h 20 in all. Naruko is twelve minutes on the Shinkansen to Furukawa and three quarters of an hour up the Rikuu East line. Zao is the Senzan line rapid over the mountains to Yamagata, then a bus of 37 minutes up to the ski village. Hanamaki is the Yamabiko to Kitakami, one stop on the local line and a bus, about 2 h 10. Higashiyama is the long one: the Shinkansen to Koriyama, the Ban-etsu West line over to Aizu-Wakamatsu and the loop bus, nearly four hours with the waits, and easier from Tokyo. Best for: A private open-air tub on your own terrace, with nobody knocking on the door

Ten suites: Hana, Tori, Kaze, Tsuki, Mizu, Ishi, Koushi, Hikari and the paired Sanshi and Suimei. Each lists 客室専用露天風呂 in Shigaraki ware or Aomori hiba, a terrace and, in most, a separate shower booth; Tsuki-no-ma is the top-floor pair room with a city view and its own lounge. The annex is run by Takinoyu and shares its front desk and reserved baths, and its notice tells guests the room is a private room the staff will not enter.
