Hita Onsen Genseniya
日田温泉 源泉屋
Does Hita Onsen Genseniya allow tattoos? In a private bath
Genseniya, the old Yoake Yakuto Onsen, answers the tattoo question on its own FAQ: not in the large baths, but its four private baths of self-flowing bicarbonate spring water are open to you.
Genseniya turns away tattooed bathers from its large baths and recommends its private baths instead. Its four private baths are rented by the 50 minutes for up to three adults, so a tattooed bather can soak in the same spring water there.

The bath
The spring is a bicarbonate spring that rises on its own from 1,500 meters underground, colorless and clear, and the operator describes it as silky and moisturizing. It flows straight into the baths, it can be drunk, and the large baths have a cascade shower (utaseyu). The operator has had the water studied and says it is rich in microbes that are kind to the skin. The men's and women's large baths cost ¥600 plus ¥50 bathing tax, and ¥400 for children from age 4 through elementary school. The herbal bath of ten crude drugs, steeped each morning, has been run as a cold plunge since May 2026.
The four private baths each take up to three adults, or two adults and three children, for 50 minutes. The enamel bath costs ¥1,300; the cut-stone bath and the hinoki cypress bath, which has a tatami floor, cost ¥1,500 each. On weekdays a single bather pays ¥1,000 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and a 30-minute extension is ¥600 or ¥700; there are no extensions on weekends and holidays. The private baths have no soap or shampoo, so bring your own. Last entry is 7 p.m., or earlier once every room is taken.
The hotel
Genseniya is a day-use bathhouse beside Route 210 at Yoake, at the western end of Hita, five minutes on foot from Yoake Station. It ran for decades as Yoake Yakuto Onsen and took its new name in December 2025. After bathing, the lounge is free for 30 minutes; on weekdays a five-hour or all-day pass covers the large bath and a longer rest. The counter sells beef-tendon udon noodles, onsen tofu, soft-serve ice cream, fermented plum or yuzu drinks and coffee. It is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Good to know
- Bring soap and shampoo to the private baths; only the large baths have them.
- Solo bathers pay ¥1,000 on weekdays for any private bath between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.; say so at the counter.
- Closed on Tuesdays, but open when a Tuesday is a national holiday.
- Rest 30 minutes free in the lounge after your bath.
Getting there
Yoake Station on the JR Kyudai Main Line, two stops west of Hita, is about 5 minutes on foot, by the operator's count. The limited expresses from Hakata do not stop at Yoake, so ride one to Hita and take a local train two stops back, or take a local from Kurume. Drivers are about 15 minutes from either Haki IC or Hita IC.
