Junicho, in the hills above the town Ryokan (detached villas, no shared bath)

Does Yurian allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Ten cottages scattered over a hillside above Ibusuki, each with an open-air bath running on undiluted hot spring water, and several with a hot spring pool in the garden. The buggy ride from reception is the only time you pass another guest.

There is no shared bath here to have a rule about. Every villa stands on its own with an open-air bath attached, filled with undiluted hot spring water that the operator cools with well water rather than by adding cold to the source. Several villas also have a hot spring pool in the garden, which the operator suggests using in a swimsuit. For the length of the stay, nobody sees you bathe.

Hakata to Ibusuki is about 3 h 25: the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo, then the Ibusuki Makurazaki line down the coast, which the sightseeing train Ibusuki no Tamatebako also runs. Ureshino is about 1 h 20, a limited express to Takeo-Onsen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen one stop further. Kurokawa has no railway at all: the coach from Hakata takes about 2 h 40 by way of Hita and Tsuetate. Yurian · map data © OpenStreetMap contributors · open in Google Maps

What happens when you arrive

Skip the shared baths and reserve the private one the way this page describes. Once the door is closed, the bath is yours.

How we know

Confirmed from official site, bath structure rather than a tattoo policy (the operator’s room and FAQ pages, which describe each villa’s own bath and the hot spring pools)

Best for: A tattooed traveler who would rather there were no communal bath at all

Ten villas in two styles, Japanese cottages and Asian-style Satsuma villas, spread across a wooded hillside and reached by buggy from the front desk. The pools run about 5.7 to 7.8 meters by 2 meters and 90 cm deep; bring a swimsuit, since none are lent. Meals are served in private dining rooms, groups above twelve are not taken, and day use of a villa can be arranged in advance for 11:00 to 19:00. The operator warns in as many words that insects share the hillside.
