Does Hotel Mukaitaki allow tattoos? In a private bath
Hotel Mukaitaki reopened in February 2025 as nine rooms over the Arakawa, and every one has an open-air tub of source-flowing water on the balcony, in cypress, ceramic or granite.
Mukaitaki publishes no tattoo rule. All nine of its rooms have their own open-air tub of source-flowing hot spring water facing the river, so a tattooed guest can bathe in the room and skip the shared baths.
The bath
The water is an alkaline simple spring at 65°C. The hotel calls it a bath for the skin, leaving it moist and smooth, and lists it for autonomic imbalance, sleeplessness and low mood among other complaints, from joint and back pain to fatigue.
The rooms are the reason to come. Each of the nine has its own open-air tub on the balcony, fed with source-flowing water and facing the Arakawa gorge with nothing in the way. The tubs come in three materials: cypress, ceramic and granite. The 67-square-meter Japanese-Western rooms and the 98-square-meter suites both carry all three, and one cypress room is barrier-free.
There are shared baths too. Each side has a large indoor bath with windows on two walls over the stream, an open-air bath and a sauna; the men's open-air area has cypress, ceramic and reclining tubs, the women's a granite tub. They are open from 3 p.m. to midnight and from 5 to 10:30 a.m., the saunas until 11 p.m.
The hotel
Mukaitaki is an inn the hotel says has run for more than a hundred years, rebuilt as nine rooms and reopened in February 2025. The lobby is glass on one side with kumiko lattice screens. Dinner is served in nine private dining rooms named after places in Fukushima, and guests choose French or Japanese cooking at the restaurant Kyufuku. The smoking room is for heated tobacco only. Check-in 3 p.m., check-out 11 a.m.
