Yumori Onsen Hostel

Does Yumori Onsen Hostel allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Yumori is a 30-room hostel in Tsuchiyu with dormitory bunks, a shared kitchen and four private baths rented by the hour, from a white-tiled tub at ¥1,500 to a cypress half-open-air bath at ¥4,000.

Yumori calls its hot spring tattoo-friendly, and its day-trip page says how that works: a guest with tattoos books one of the four private baths and bathes alone. The welcome is worded around the private baths, so book one rather than counting on the large shared bath.

The bath

The water is Tsuchiyu's own, a spring the hostel puts at 60°C and alkaline, cooled for bathing with spring water from the mountain. The hostel lists it for high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, rheumatism, neuralgia, skin complaints, women's complaints and cold sensitivity, and calls it a bath for the skin. The large bath is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. for staying guests, and the men's and women's sides are sometimes swapped. Day visitors can bathe from 11 a.m., with earlier closing on Saturdays and no day use on Thursdays or the first Monday.

The private baths are the reason to come. There are four, all fed from the source, and each is rented for an hour by reservation. Ren and Ran are white-tiled indoor tubs at ¥1,500 and ¥2,000. Kaede, at ¥3,000, is a cypress tub with a barrier-free layout for wheelchair users. Tsubaki, at ¥4,000, pairs a cypress half-open-air tub with a black-tiled indoor one, and the hostel calls it the most popular. Day visitors pay the bath admission on top, and the private baths take day bookings from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The hotel

Yumori is a hostel of 30 rooms in six types: Japanese tatami rooms, bed-and-tatami rooms, group and family rooms, a Universal Suite for up to five with its own source-fed cypress bath, and mixed and women-only dormitories of up to ten beds. Most rooms share the large bath and shower rooms. Stays are room only, with breakfast and dinner sold as options, a shared kitchen and a lounge cafe. Its own pages call it Fukushima's first hot spring hostel, run under the Sansuiso name.
