Asaya Hotel

あさやホテル

Does Asaya Hotel allow tattoos? Yes, covered

Cover seal required

A single small tattoo under a cover seal can use the large bath, and nothing larger. Seals are sold in the 6th-floor shop, and the private baths take the rest.

The rule is in the hotel's own FAQ. It asks tattooed guests to use a private bath or the bath in their room, and makes the exception for a one-point tattoo a seal hides.

The bath

The hotel owns its source, the Asaya spring, also called Kodakara no Yu. It's a simple spring that comes up at 37.1°C, colorless and odorless, pumped at 172 liters a minute. It supplies every guest room's bath as well as the shared ones.

The Sky Garden open-air bath is on the 13th floor of the Shuhokan wing, about 80 meters above the river. Its two sides swap between men and women overnight, in a pattern that reverses each month. The south side has a boat-shaped tub, the north a standing bath and a lying bath. It's open 2 p.m. to midnight (from 3 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays) and 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., and closes in strong wind or lightning. Each wing also has large indoor baths. On the 1st floor of the Shuhokan, both with saunas, and in the basement of the Hachibankan, where the men's side adds an open-air tub and a seated bath and the women's a lying bath, a nano-mist sauna and a silky bath. Dyson and ReFa dryers, a shampoo bar and ReFa shower heads are provided.

The four private baths, in black granite, rock, hinoki cypress and red granite, are circulated. They cost ¥4,000 for 50 minutes, 2 p.m. to midnight (last entry 11 p.m.), for up to five people. Book at check-in, or by phone for times after 8 p.m. Day bathing ended in July 2014.

The hotel

Founded in 1888, with two wings joined by corridors on the 1st and 6th floors. The Shuhokan has Japanese, Western and Japanese-Western rooms. The Hachibankan is built in the manner of an old-style inn, and its guests share a premium lounge. Dinner is either a buffet of more than 100 Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes or a course meal in a semi-private or private room. There's also a bedrock sauna, karaoke, billiards and table tennis.

What happens when you arrive

Cover the tattoo completely before you go in. The hotel doesn't specify a size, so cover everything.

How we know

Confirmed from official site (the hotel's own FAQ)

Best for: groups who want Kinugawa's landmark rooftop bath, with the private baths as the fallback

No seal size is published. “One point” is the limit the hotel sets, and it's a smaller allowance than the chains that publish centimeters.
