Does Koshikano Onsen allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Koshikano Onsen puts a source-fed spring tub in every room and glamping dome, and its FAQ says plainly that guests with tattoos can bathe. There has been no shared bath to worry about since day use ended in 2021.

The inn answers the question in its own FAQ: yes, a guest with tattoos can bathe, because every room comes with its own bath and nobody else sees you. Day-use bathing and the family baths ended in November 2021, so the only tubs left are the ones inside the rooms and glamping units.

The bath

The spring is a sodium bicarbonate water that rises on its own, 49°C at the source, pH 6.9 to 7, with 1,320 mg of bicarbonate and 226 mg of metasilicic acid per kilogram. The inn sells it as a beauty bath: it says the water lifts skin oils and dead skin gently and leaves you smooth and refreshed. Every bath on the property runs on it straight from the source.

There is no shared bath. Day-use bathing and the family baths closed in November 2021, and the inn now takes staying guests only. In the ryokan wing, rooms 111 to 113 have an open-air spring bath and an indoor one, plus a cold plunge and a tent sauna of their own; rooms 201 to 203 have an open-air and an indoor spring bath; the small rooms 211 to 220 have an indoor spring bath only. Every glamping unit, whether suite, standard or ryokan-glamping, has its own source-fed open-air bath, a private sauna, a cold bath, a shower and a toilet, so the whole stay can pass without meeting another guest at a tub. The inn publishes no bathing hours for the room tubs.

The hotel

The inn opened in 1978 as Sachiso and has been rebuilt in stages, with the glamping domes added from 2022. Ryokan rooms run from 13 to 39 square meters for two or three guests; the domes are air-conditioned with their own dining space. Dinner and breakfast plans or room-only stays are sold, and the glamping side cooks on a grill at the unit. The main building has a dining hall, a food and drink counter, a free drink station and baby beds. Check-in is 5 p.m., with paid early check-in from 3 p.m., and check-out 10 a.m. Dogs stay in set unit types.
