Does Honoka no Yu Kaeda allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Honoka no Yu Kaeda rents fourteen private rooms on the Soyamaji sulfur spring in 55-minute blocks, the premium ones with a Shigaraki ceramic tub under the open sky.

No tattoo rule is published. Every bath here is a private room rented to one party by the clock, so there is no shared tub to be turned away from.

The bath

The water is Soyamaji Onsen, which the shop says flows straight from the source, a sulfur spring it sells as a beauty bath. It is the same source the Dormy Inn trucks into the city.

There is no shared bath. Fourteen private rooms come in three grades. A standard room has one bath. A semi-premium room has an indoor bath and a reclining bath. A premium room has both of those plus an open-air tub of Shigaraki ceramic, a roomier changing and washing area and a massage chair. The photos show pale cypress-edged tubs under a wooden spout and a round brown-glazed ceramic tub standing on white gravel against a black board fence. Each room takes up to five people, with ¥500 for every extra person.

Rooms are sold in 55, 85 and 115-minute blocks: standard ¥2,500, ¥3,750 and ¥5,000; semi-premium ¥3,000, ¥4,500 and ¥6,000; premium ¥3,500, ¥5,250 and ¥7,000. High season adds ¥1,100 to every price. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., last entry 10 p.m. Book online through the shop's reservation calendar or by phone. A towel set is ¥500, a body towel ¥200 and a shampoo set ¥500; bring your own to save the fee.

The hotel

A low wooden family-bath house with its name painted on a grey board wall and 19 parking spaces, one of a small chain whose other shops are at Miyazaki Airport, Ibii on the Nichinan coast, Mimata and Kita-Hiroshima. Admission is by the room, not the person, so a couple pays the same as a family of five.

Good to know

Getting there

The shop publishes no train or bus directions and no walking time; it gives its address, a map link and 19 free parking spaces. By the map it sits about a kilometer inland from Soyamaji Station on the JR Nichinan Line, which is about 20 minutes from Miyazaki Station, and a few minutes by car from the Aoshima hotels. Treat it as a stop by car or taxi.
