Tattoo friendly onsen in Miyazaki

Miyazaki is a warm, palm-lined coast on the Pacific side of Kyushu. Its best-known sight is Aoshima, a small island ringed by wave-cut rock shelves called the Devil’s Washboard.

Miyazaki is a refusal coast for the shared bath: five of its big hotels say no in print, and this page names them so nobody finds out at the desk. The list is the other side of the ledger. Dormy Inn Miyazaki admits a tattoo under a seal and hands the seals out free; the Route Inn on Tachibana-dori does the same under its group rule. The Ocean Tower at Seagaia rents two private baths to its guests. Down the Nichinan line, Jizoan at Aoshima runs its spring only into two private baths, Nemunohana gives each of ten villas an open-air rock bath, Nazuna Obi puts a tub of the Kitago spring in every room, and Honoka no Yu’s two houses rent private-bath rooms by the hour to anyone who walks in.

Dormy Inn Miyazaki

天然温泉 日向の湯 ドーミーイン宮崎

The hotel’s own bath page asks guests with tattoos or body paint to put on a tattoo cover seal before bathing. The seals are handed out at the front desk. The page sets no size limit.

タトゥー、ボディーペイントをされている方は、タトゥーカバーシールをご使用の上、ご入浴をお願いしております。

Best for: a cheap downtown bed with a real hot spring on the roof and free noodles at night

The water is an alkaline simple sulfur cold mineral spring trucked in from Soyamaji Onsen at Aoshima, so the hotel heats it. Bath 3 p.m. to 10 a.m.; the sauna pauses from 1 to 5 a.m. Seals are free at the desk.

Hotel Route Inn Miyazaki Tachibana-dori

ホテルルートイン宮崎橘通

The rule sits in the FAQ of Route Inn Hotels, which the hotel’s own facilities page links to. A tattooed guest is refused unless a cover seal hides the tattoo completely; then the large bath may be used. No size is set, and the FAQ does not say whether seals are sold.

入れ墨(タトゥー)のある方のご入浴はお断りしております。ただし、カバーシールを用いて入れ墨(タトゥー)が完全に覆える場合に限り、大浴場をご利用いただけます。

Best for: a sealed-up soak on the 14th floor with free breakfast, ten minutes from the station

The bath, Tabibito-no-yu, is a radium artificial hot spring, heated water and not a natural source; the hotel says so on its bath page. Open 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. and 5 to 10 a.m., free for guests.

Private onsen and baths in Miyazaki

Tattoos are fine in a private onsen, whether a bath you reserve or one in your room. The communal baths are restricted, or the policy is unconfirmed. What this means

The Shosenkyu bath page says that, as a rule, exposed tattoos are refused in the shared baths. The answer is the two private baths for hotel guests, Hanare-yu and Oyunomiya, which are booked ahead and used by one party at a time; their pages set no tattoo rule.

※原則タトゥー・刺青の露出はお断りしております

Best for: a 154-meter ocean-view tower where a reserved open-air bath in the pines costs ¥6,000 an hour

Renamed from Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort on June 6, 2025, when the resort ended its Marriott franchise. Hanare-yu is ¥6,000 per 60 minutes, ¥3,000 for Club Twin guests and free once a stay for Club Suite guests, 7 a.m. to noon and 3 to 10:30 p.m., up to four people. Oyunomiya is ¥8,000 per 90 minutes, ¥5,200 for Club Twin and free once for Club Suite, two adults of junior high age or older, starting at 7:30 a.m., 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Both are hotel guests only, reservation only, online from a month ahead. The Shingetsu shared bath is closed for renovation from October 2026 to January 2027.

Kigan no Yado Aoshima Jizoan

「祈願の宿」青島・地蔵庵

The inn publishes no tattoo rule. Its hot spring is used only as private baths: two rooms, Takara-yu and the rock bath, each taken by one party for 60 minutes, so there is no shared tub at all. The detached special room also has its own open-air and indoor bath.

Best for: couples on a fertility or safe-birth pilgrimage who want a silky alkaline bath to themselves

The spring rises on the inn’s own grounds at pH 9.1 (the day-use page prints 9.2) and the water is changed daily. Day visitors pay from ¥3,500 for a pair for 60 minutes, ¥1,000 per extra adult, from 9 a.m., booked two days ahead; the site does not say what staying guests pay for the private baths. Check-in 4 p.m. (last 8 p.m.), check-out 10 a.m.

Nemunohana

北郷 音色香の季 合歓のはな

No tattoo rule is published. There is no shared bath: each of the ten detached villas has its own open-air rock bath of Kitago spring water in its garden, so a tattooed guest bathes alone.

Best for: a two-night forest stay where the only hot spring tub is the one in your own garden

The outdoor baths are the spring; the inn says the indoor tubs are heated tap water in the villas, and Kaze’s indoor bath was rebuilt as a bedrock bath. The source is 35.0°C, so the water is heated. The Keion baths of Yuki and Yume were renewed in July 2025.

No tattoo rule is published. There is no shared bath: all five rooms have their own open-air bath fed with source-flowing Kitago hot spring, so bathing is private by design.

Best for: a night in a 140-year-old samurai house with a spring-fed tub on your own deck

The water is brought from Kitago Onsen in the same city; the FAQ calls it source-flowing and says its salt content warms the body through in a short soak. Honmurasaki is the one room with both an indoor and an open-air hot spring bath. A private outdoor sauna with a view over the castle town rents for ¥3,300 a person for two hours. Dinner at the inn’s restaurant needs three days’ notice.

Traveler’s note

Not listed, because they refuse tattoos on their own pages and have no bath you can take alone: ANA Holiday Inn Resort Miyazaki, Miyazaki Kanko Hotel, Green Rich Hotel Miyazaki Tachibana-dori 2 and Hotel Marix. Hotel Aoshima Sun Kumar refuses too, and its FAQ says a tattooed guest cannot bathe at all, so its private bath is not read as an exception. The Ocean Tower refuses exposed tattoos in its shared baths; it is here for the two private baths it rents. Nemunohana’s indoor tubs and the Route Inn’s bath are heated water, not the spring, and both pages say so.

Common questions

Miyazaki questions

Can I use a shared bath in Miyazaki with a tattoo?

At two hotels, under a seal: Dormy Inn Miyazaki, which gives out seals free at the desk, and Hotel Route Inn Miyazaki Tachibana-dori under the Route Inn group rule. Nobody on the coast publishes an open rule, and five hotels publish a refusal.

Which places give me a bath of my own?

Aoshima Jizoan sends its spring only into two private baths, an hour a party. Nemunohana’s ten villas each have an open-air rock bath, Nazuna Obi’s five rooms each have an open-air tub, Hinata no Yado has a family bath and three rooms with their own, and Hotel Nichinan Kitago Resort has one family bath on reservation. The Ocean Tower at Seagaia rents Hanare-yu and Oyunomiya to its guests.

Is there a day-use private bath I can just walk into?

Yes. Honoka no Yu at Kaeda has fourteen private-bath rooms and its Ibii house more, rented by the block; Sun Cherry Kitago, run by the city, rents three family baths by the hour. None of the three publishes a tattoo rule, and the door is your own.

How do I get to Miyazaki and down the coast?

Fly: Miyazaki Airport’s station is ten minutes from Miyazaki Station. By rail from Hakata, the Mizuho reaches Kagoshima-Chuo in about 1 hour 16 and the Kirishima express runs on to Miyazaki in about 2 hours 10. From Miyazaki the Nichinan line local reaches Kodomo-no-kuni, for Aoshima, in about 25 minutes, Kitago in about an hour and Obi in about 85.
