Does Nozawa Onsen Hotel allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

The balcony tubs are Mino ceramic in the Japanese-Western rooms and hinoki in the Japanese rooms, and both run from the hotel’s own spring rather than the village supply.

The hotel says nothing about tattoos. Book a room with an open-air bath on the balcony, fed from the hotel’s own spring for your whole stay, and the shared baths stop mattering. In the warmer months there is also a free private open-air bath, Akata-no-yu, which shuts for winter.

What happens when you arrive

Skip the shared baths and reserve the private one the way this page describes. Once the door is closed, the bath is yours.

How we know

Confirmed from official site — bath structure, not a tattoo policy (the open-air-room page and the bath page)

Best for: A ski trip with an outdoor tub of your own that stays open through the snow

Rooms with a private open-air bath come in two types: Japanese-Western rooms with a Mino-ware tub and Japanese rooms with a hinoki tub, free-flowing from the hotel’s own source. Private open-air bath (赤田の湯): free, eight groups a day for 45 minutes each, booked at the front desk at check-in; closed in winter and in bad weather (“冬季・悪天候時は、閉鎖となります”). The shared Ruri-no-yu and Hinoki-no-yu swap between men and women by time of day and are open 24 hours except for cleaning, 10:00–14:00. Some standard rooms have no bath or no toilet.
