The bath
A rooftop open-air bath next to Omiya STN, which the hotel calls one of Japan’s leading terminals, and it makes a point of the contrast: the open structure and the dim lighting at night are meant to make you forget the city is there. The indoor tub is the same large, stretch-out design the chain uses everywhere, with plenty of shower booths. The men’s side has an auto-löyly sauna and a cold plunge, the women’s a mist sauna.
Open 15:00 to 11:00 the next morning, saunas closed 02:00 to 06:00. Guests only. No towels in the spa — bring one from the room. Privacy film on the windows.
The hotel
Candeo’s 22nd hotel, self-declared four-star, at 1-401-1 Sakuragi-cho, six minutes from Omiya STN. The rooms run larger than the chain’s Tokyo ones: a 17 m² Queen, a 19 m² Corner Queen, 22 m² King and Twin rooms, a 24 m² Corner King that takes four adults, and a 32 m² Corner Triple. Two types matter for a reader of this site — the 32–33 m² View Bath Twin and the Private Spa Twin, each with its own open-air bath on the room, the latter’s six square metres of it. Check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00.
The Sky Lounge, a café and bar, is on what the hotel calls its most scenic floor. Breakfast is the chain’s buffet. There is no hotel parking; a public lot shares the building at up to 2,000 yen a day.
What is good about it
- Rooms with their own open-air bath. The View Bath Twin and the Private Spa Twin put the bath on the room — and a bath of your own needs no seal at all.
- The Shinkansen stop north of Tokyo. Six minutes from Omiya STN, where the northern lines all call.
- A rooftop open-air bath without central-Tokyo prices.
Getting there
Omiya is where the Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines all stop, which is the reason to sleep here rather than in central Tokyo before a morning train north. Tokyo STN is about 40 minutes away by train; Haneda about 1 hour 50, Narita about 2 hours.

Not a chain rule
Candeo does not set this centrally, and that matters more than it sounds. Four of its sky spas ask for nothing — Roppongi and Kyoto Karasuma Rokkaku abolished the rule on 24 May 2023, and the two Osaka properties simply state they do not restrict on body art. Eight others still want a cover seal, and two of those, at Kobe and Nankai Wakayama, take a third route again by setting aside a late-night window instead. So there is no “Candeo policy” to rely on.
Tokyo Shimbashi shows why the property’s own spa page is the thing to read and a notice is not. It announced abolition in April 2024, and its spa page today asks for a cover sticker in the same words the chain’s seal properties use. This site listed it as unrestricted on the strength of that notice until 6 September 2026, and was wrong to.
What happens when you arrive
Cover the tattoo completely before you go in, with a seal that fits the size the property allows — that figure is in the policy line at the top of this page, and it is the property’s, not ours. Where the seals are sold at the front desk, buy them at check-in rather than at bath time; where they are not, bring your own. A seal that does not cover the whole tattoo counts as no seal, and staff are within their rules to turn you away at the door. Nothing needs declaring, but nothing may show.
