Does Yuya FUROBAKKA allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

FUROBAKKA in Kurobe is a bath park of walled family-bath yards and barrel saunas on soft local groundwater, open every day until 11 p.m. Its FAQ says a tattooed guest is welcome in the family baths and nowhere else.

The operator answers the tattoo question in its own FAQ, bath by bath. The family baths are fully private, so a tattooed guest may use them. The rental saunas share their cold plunge and cooling space, so tattoos are turned away there, and the large bath Kurobeya refuses them too, including faint tattoos, tattoos under seals and visits after dark. The operator says it is reviewing the rule for diversity reasons but that for now the shared areas stay closed. The water throughout is Kurobe groundwater, not a hot spring.

The bath

Everything here runs on groundwater. The operator pumps 560 liters a minute from under Kurobe, water that stays at 13°C all year and that it calls some of the softest in the country; the cold plunges take it straight and the tubs take it heated. There is no hot spring, and the operator never claims one. The large bath, Kurobeya, has a carbonated indoor tub and a wide open-air bath on each side, two saunas called the mountain hut and the cellar, concrete-pipe cold plunges 160 and 90 cm deep, and chairs for cooling off; it needs no booking. Seven rental saunas, four barrels and three containers, share the cooling space, which is why they are closed to tattoos.

The family baths are the point. Ten walled units stand in a row in the Tatesan area, four with a sauna: electric in the small units, a wood stove in the large. Each has an anteroom in log-cabin or barrel style and a round outdoor tub; some yards have a roof and some open to the sky, and you cannot choose which. A session is 120 minutes. Without a sauna a unit costs ¥2,500 to ¥3,500 by size and day; with a sauna ¥8,000 to ¥11,000, including the large bath, which no-sauna guests add for ¥500 each. Book on the operator's Coubic page by the day before; same-day bookings go by phone if a unit is free. Open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., last entry 10 p.m., every day.

The hotel

A day-use bath and sauna park that calls itself Toyama's first all-round relaxation facility, laid out as four areas: Kurobeya for the large bath, Yamasan for the rental saunas, Tatesan for the family baths and Tomisan for food, with a farm-style diner, a cafe, barbecue pits and a campfire space. Admission to the large bath is ¥900 on weekdays, ¥1,000 on weekends and holidays and ¥1,200 in peak season, children ¥350; a membership card costs ¥300 and knocks a little off every price, and a ten-ticket book is ¥8,000. Open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. with no fixed closing day.

The operator does not say how far the walk is from the stop. From the Hokuriku Shinkansen at Kurobe-Unazuki-Onsen it is about 5.5 km, 10 minutes by taxi; there is no shuttle. This is the rule for the shared baths. It doesn’t apply to the private baths.

Best for: two hours in a walled yard of your own with a round tub, a wood-stove sauna if you pay for it, and a plain yes from the operator

Ten family bath units, four of them with a sauna, in two sizes: with no sauna ¥2,500 to ¥3,500 a unit depending on size and day, with a sauna ¥8,000 to ¥11,000, members a little less; a session is 120 minutes since January 2024. Sauna units include the large bath; no-sauna units add it for ¥500 a person. Book on the operator’s Coubic page by the day before, or by phone on the day if a unit is free and staff have time to prepare it; no same-day cancellation. The operator never calls its water hot spring: every tub runs on Kurobe groundwater pumped at 560 liters a minute and 13°C year round, heated for the baths and left cold for the plunges. Admission to the large bath alone is ¥900 on weekdays, ¥1,000 on weekends and ¥1,200 in peak season; children ¥350.
