Does Mori no Sumika Resort & Spa allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Mori no Sumika turns tattooed guests away from its large baths, so book a room with an open-air tub. The room tubs are heated tap water, not hot-spring water.

The rule is in the hotel’s FAQ, which bars tattooed guests from the summer garden pool too.

The bath

The Komorebi annex, reached along a garden walkway from the main building, has seven rooms with an open-air bath for two or three people, and the Garden Suite, for up to four, with an open-air tub and a sauna. In the main building, two View Luxury rooms on the 6th floor, three classic Japanese rooms and one Japanese room with a double bed have an open-air bath, and two Japanese-modern rooms have a jacuzzi. Every room tub is heated tap water.

The large baths, Jurin no Yu on the top floor and Mori no Ideyu on the ground floor, use hot-spring water, with water added, heated and filtered. Both have saunas and cold plunges and are open 2 p.m. to midnight and 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Bring towels from your room.

The hotel

The garden covers about 16,500 square meters (4 acres), with a waterfall and a walkway, Shiki Kairo, through cherry blossoms in April and red leaves in late November. Check-in is 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., checkout 10 a.m.; you can stay until noon for ¥5,500 per room per hour. Parking is free for 40 cars, first come, first served. No pets.

This is the rule for the shared baths. It doesn’t apply to the private baths.

Best for: couples who want an open-air tub in a forest annex and a big landscaped garden to walk
