Nothing to cover. Hoshino Resorts publishes one rule for all its hotels: it does not restrict guests with tattoos. The same answer keeps a discretion clause, under which staff may refuse the hot spring or large bath if they judge other guests could be frightened. KAI Kaga has no page of its own that says anything different.

Best for: A Kutani-tiled bath with nothing to cover, and the Kosoyu across the square

48 rooms. Check-in 14:30, check-out 11:00. The large bath is for staying guests only; the group FAQ says KAI baths do not take day visitors. The property page says guests may also use the Kosoyu, the rebuilt Meiji town bath beside the hotel. Rooms with an open-air bath are sold. The group’s discretion clause is the one condition a tattooed guest could meet at the door.

Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Premium Yamashitaya

The rule is a refusal with one way in: a paid cover seal of the hotel’s own design, and only if it hides the tattoo completely. The same sentence is printed on the bath page and on the day-visit page. No size is given, so a large piece depends on how much one of their seals covers.

Best for: A thirteenth-floor open-air bath that faces the sunset over the Kaga plain

Large baths 15:00–24:00 and 05:00–10:00; the rooftop Kaga Tenku-no-yu closes 19:30–20:00 and 08:00–08:30 while it switches between men and women. Day visitors (07:00–10:00 and 15:00–24:00, last entry 22:00, 1,240 yen on weekdays) get only the fourth-floor bath, not the rooftop one. The rooftop bath was renovated in April 2024. Buy the seal before going up.

Tattooed guests may use the large baths only under the hotel’s own paid cover seal, and only when it hides the tattoo completely. The rule sits on the hotel’s bath page and again under the day-visit prices. There is no published size limit, so settle a big tattoo at the front desk before paying.

Best for: Two hinoki indoor baths, one each side, at a buffet-hotel price

Baths 15:00–24:00 and 02:00–10:00. A rock open-air bath and two hinoki baths, alternating between men and women. The hotel lists its water as calcium-sodium sulfate. Day bathing is sold. The seal is sold at the hotel; the price is not published.

Yuzankaku

雄山閣

One seal, and you bring it. The hotel refuses tattooed guests at the large baths as a rule, then makes an exception for a tattoo hidden by a single 8×10 cm cover seal, and says the guest must supply the seal. Anything one seal of that size cannot hide is not admitted. Rooms with a hinoki bath or a Kutani-ware open-air bath avoid the question.

Best for: A small tattoo and a seal packed from home

120 rooms. The hotel does not sell seals, so bring one 8×10 cm (3.1×3.9 in) seal. Some basic rooms have no bathroom at all; rooms with a hinoki bath or a Kutani-ware open-air bath are sold separately. Sauna 15:00–23:00 and 06:00–09:00, with a cold bath on one side only. Run by the Breezbay group.

Araya Totoan

Eleven of the seventeen rooms have an open-air bath fed from the inn’s own source, and one of those is the booking to make. Araya publishes no tattoo rule for its two large baths or its dark “meditation bath”, so treat those as unknown.

Best for: Sleeping beside the spring that the town’s founding legend is about

17 rooms, 11 with a source-fed open-air bath (twin rooms with an open-air bath on the terrace, and Japanese-Western rooms with a half-open-air bath). Check-in 14:00, check-out 11:00. The shared baths run on a time rota between men and women. The inn says its source yields about 100,000 liters a day, the most in Yamashiro, and that its first owner was the domain’s bath keeper. The shop moved in March 2025.

Miyabi no Yado Kaga Hyakumangoku

みやびの宿 加賀百万石

No tattoo rule is published. The answer is the family bath on the main building’s south side, rented by the slot with its own rest room, sauna and cold bath, or a room in the Kanade annex with an open-air bath of 100 percent source water.

Best for: A private bath with a sauna and cold plunge of its own, rented for 80 minutes

Family bath 15:00–24:00: 80 minutes for 5,500 to 8,500 yen or 110 minutes for 7,500 to 10,500 yen, depending on one to five people; children 5 and under free. It comes with a rest room, TV, hinoki bath, open-air bath, sauna, cold bath and massage chair. The Kanade annex has 45 rooms, including a Royal Suite where the hotel says the Showa Emperor stayed; several types have an open-air bath of source water.

Yunokuni Tensyo

The large baths are closed to tattooed guests: under each of the three bath halls the hotel prints that tattooed and drunk guests are firmly refused. The rule sits in each large bath’s notes, and the hotel sells rooms with an open-air bath on its own source, which is the way to bathe here.

Best for: A suite with its own open-air bath on the hotel’s private source

The refusal appears under each of the three large baths (Kutani, Takimi and Yugen), not as a hotel-wide rule; it does not mention room baths. Room baths: the Tensho wing’s open-air suites (six renewed in August 2025), the Hakuun main wing’s open-air rooms (seven renewed in February 2023) and view rooms in the Hakuun new wing. The hotel calls the water its own source (自家源泉).

Rurikoh

The inn answers the question itself: tattooed guests are asked not to use the large baths, and are pointed to the private open-air baths or a room with an open-air bath instead. There are five private baths, named for the five Kutani glaze colors, each starting on the half hour.

Note: Not every room tub here is hot spring water: some are ordinary heated water, and each room page says which. Check before you book a room for its tub.

Best for: Five private open-air baths to choose from, which the inn itself recommends

Five private open-air baths (wood, rock and others named after the Kutani five colors), each starting at half past the hour; the fee is not published on the bath page. 115 rooms across the Hoshi, Kaze and Tsuki wings plus twins and singles. Some open-air room baths are hot spring water and some are not: the room pages mark each one. Run by Yorozuya Kanko, which also runs Hatori.

Hatori

Hatori publishes no tattoo rule. It has two private baths, one hinoki and one stone, on the same hot spring water as the large baths, open 07:00 to 22:00. Its sister inn Rurikoh sends tattooed guests to private baths; Hatori has not said so for itself.

Note: The two private baths are hot spring water. The open-air tubs on the Kaede wing suites are not: the inn marks every one as ordinary heated water.

Best for: A hinoki or stone private bath in a mid-size inn in the middle of town

Private baths Kurakake-no-yu (hinoki) and Makomo-no-yu (stone), 07:00–22:00; the fee is not published. The Kaede wing’s suites have an open-air tub on the deck, but the inn marks every one as not hot spring water, filled by the guest. The large baths are open 24 hours. Run by Yorozuya Kanko.

Tachibana Shikitei

たちばな四季亭

No tattoo rule is published. Book a room with an open-air bath: the inn has rooms with a hinoki open-air bath and courtyard and rooms with an open-air bath, all piped from the source and usable day and night.

Best for: A hinoki open-air bath with its own small courtyard garden

The inn’s FAQ says the room open-air baths use source water but are filtered and recirculated for hygiene and temperature, while the large open-air bath is free-flowing with water added to cool it. Closed 6–11 September 2026 for maintenance and reopening on 12 September, per its own notice. The inn has a Rosanjin connection and private dining rooms opened in March 2023.

Hotel Kikyou

No tattoo rule is published. The special rooms carry the answer: a suite with its own dining room and a free-flowing half-open-air bath, two special rooms Seiraku and Getsuraku, and a room with a half-open-air bath and a private sauna.

Best for: A room with a half-open-air bath and a sauna of its own

The half-open-air baths are free-flowing source water. The special rooms are sold one group a day. Smoking has been banned in the open-air rooms since 24 April 2023. Free pick-up from Kaga-Onsen STN by reservation.

Onsen Meiso Club Fujiya Ryokan

No tattoo rule is published. The inn is built around three detached private baths, an open-air bath, a hinoki bath and a granite bath, booked in advance, and it also sells rooms with an open-air bath.

Best for: Three detached private baths to book a slot in

Private baths by advance reservation; the inn changed its slot start times on 1 August 2025, and some plans include one free session. The large bath is open around the clock except 11:00–14:00 for cleaning. Free pick-up from Kaga-Onsen STN every 30 minutes from 14:30 to 18:00, by reservation. No pets.

Kaga no Yado Housyoutei

加賀の宿 宝生亭

No tattoo rule is published. The private open-air bath, Hosai-no-yu, is reserved and costs staying guests 2,000 yen plus tax per group, and the top floor has two Kutani-themed rooms with an open-air bath of their own.

Best for: Families: the private bath comes with 200 rubber ducks

Private open-air bath by reservation, 2,000 yen plus tax per group for staying guests; day visitors can also rent it. Two Kurara rooms on the top floor, colored after Aode and Akae Kutani, have their own open-air bath. The inn is built for children: a picture-book floor, toy rooms and themed rooms.

Yu no Yado Hakusan Shoubutei

No tattoo rule is published. Eighteen rooms have a hot spring bath inside, fourteen with an open-air bath, and a source-fed private bath is booked in 45-minute slots by staying guests.

Best for: An open-air room bath without the price of a luxury inn

49 rooms, 14 with an open-air bath and 7 special rooms; the bath page counts 18 rooms with hot spring in the room. One private bath, staying guests only, advance reservation, slots from 16:00 to 22:45. The inn closes on scattered days: its news page lists closure days for September and October 2026, so check the date.
