Traveller's note Waterproof adhesive patches (cover seals) up to 8×10 cm can be bought at convenience stores near Hakone-Yumoto Station, or directly at some front desks.
Common questions

Hakone questions

What is a tattoo cover seal, and where can I buy one?

It's a waterproof adhesive patch in a skin tone that conceals small ink work while you bathe. Convenience stores around Hakone-Yumoto Station stock them, and several bathhouse reception desks sell them too.

Are private baths (kashikiri-buro) fully tattoo-friendly?

Virtually always. You're renting the bath exclusively for your own party, so the shared-bath policies simply don't apply. It's the most reliable option if you have larger work.

Can I get to these from Tokyo in a day?

Hakone-Yumoto is roughly 90 minutes from Shinjuku on the Odakyu line, so Tenzan and Hakone Yuryo both work as day trips. Gora Kadan is an overnight stay.
