Tattoo friendly baths in Kyoto

Kyoto is the hardest of the big three. Seven of eleven published bathhouse policies here ban cover seals by name, so the usual workaround is closed off in writing. What is left is mostly hotel baths — and one hot spring in the northern hills that simply says yes. The page reaches as far as Kameoka and Shiga, because that is where the bigger cover seals are.

Traveller's note Kyoto’s bathhouses are unusually explicit about banning stick-on cover seals, so do not assume a patch will get you in the way it does in Tokyo. Where a seal is accepted the size matters: Route Inn allows 11.4×20 cm, Vessel only 8×10 cm. There is no Route Inn in Kyoto city — the nearest is Kameoka, twenty minutes out.
Common questions

Kyoto questions

Why are there so few places in Kyoto?

Because Kyoto states its rules more firmly than Tokyo does. Seven of the eleven published bathhouse policies surveyed here ban stickers, paint or concealing seals by name — not just tattoos. That closes the route that works elsewhere. The hotels are the way in, and one hot spring, Kurama Onsen, is open to everyone without conditions.

Is there anywhere in Kyoto I can turn up with visible tattoos?

Kurama Onsen, thirty minutes north of the city on the Eizan line. Its own site says guests with tattoos may use the baths, with no covering and no size limit. It is an open-air bath in the cedar forest, and it is the only unconditional day-use bath found anywhere in Kyoto.

Why does this page go out to Kameoka and Shiga?

Because there is no Route Inn in Kyoto city, and Route Inn allows the largest cover seal of any chain — a single 11.4×20 cm patch, against the 8×10 cm you get in the city. The nearest are Kameoka at twenty minutes and Ritto in Shiga at twenty-five. If your work is too big for a city seal, that short train ride is the answer. Anything further north than that is a day out rather than a detour, so it is left off.

Are the old neighbourhood sento easier?

Often, but they sell nothing online and cannot be booked, so we cannot tell you reliably what any given one will do on the day. They are left out for that reason, not because they are unwelcoming.
