Does Hotel Shikinoyakata Hakone Ashinoko allow tattoos? Yes, covered
Tattoos are allowed in the baths if a cover seal hides them completely, on a trial policy since July 1, 2024. Every room also has a hot-spring tub of its own.
Cover seal required, with no size named. Tattooed guests were refused until July 1, 2024, when the hotel began accepting them on a trial basis if the design is completely hidden.

The bath
The spring is sulfur water, which the hotel describes as faintly tinted, smelling of a hot spring, and slippery-soft on the skin. The shared baths, named Unkai no Daiyokujo (the sea-of-clouds bath), are a large indoor bath and an open-air bath set high above Lake Ashi. The hotel says nothing blocks the view and that the sun goes down over the lake below. The indoor side has a dry sauna, and the hotel suggests cooling off afterward in the wind off the lake. There's no private bath. The FAQ says so and points to the shared open-air bath instead. What every guest room does have is its own tub on the same spring, and the tub varies by room, some in hinoki cypress, some ceramic.
The hotel
An adults-oriented hotel that takes guests from junior high age up, with rooms in wood and traditional Japanese colors and rooms set aside for guests traveling with a dog. Dinner is French cooking served in two sittings, chosen at check-in, and there's no room service. The building hangs 112 paintings and calligraphy works by Shokan Goma. Check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout is 11 a.m. Parking is free for 30 cars, and Lake Ashi is about three minutes by car.
Good to know
- A hot-spring tub in every room, cypress or ceramic depending on the room.
- Junior high age and up only. Younger children can't stay.
- Staying guests only. No day bathing, and the restaurant doesn't take outside diners.
Getting there
The shuttle leaves the hotel at 9:30 a.m. and 11:10 a.m.; the waiting spot is by the statue of Hojo Soun.

The hotel publishes no bus directions from Hakone-Yumoto.
Free shuttle from JR Odawara Station west exit at 2:20 p.m. and 4 p.m.; reserve by the day before.
Where it is
