Does Yusen Shidate allow tattoos? In a private bath

Every one of Shidate’s 26 rooms has an open-air bath turned toward the Toyosawa River, some cut from stone, some pottery, and the top floor looks straight down on the water.

All 26 rooms at Shidate have an open-air bath set to look over the river, so a tattooed guest can bathe without ever entering the shared baths. The inn publishes no tattoo rule for its shared open-air baths. Room tubs come in stone, rock and pottery.

Where it is

Sendai is the door to all of these. Akiu is 43 minutes on one bus from the station, with no change. Nyuto is the Komachi, JR’s Shinkansen across to Akita, as far as Tazawako, then a bus of 47 minutes, about 2 h 20 in all. Naruko is twelve minutes on the Shinkansen to Furukawa and three quarters of an hour up the Rikuu East line. Zao is the Senzan line rapid over the mountains to Yamagata, then a bus of 37 minutes up to the ski village. Hanamaki is the Yamabiko to Kitakami, one stop on the local line and a bus, about 2 h 10. Higashiyama is the long one: the Shinkansen to Koriyama, the Ban-etsu West line over to Aizu-Wakamatsu and the loop bus, nearly four hours with the waits, and easier from Tokyo. Room types on the rooms page: stone-box open-air bath (石枡), rock open-air bath and pottery open-air bath, with the fourth-floor rooms given a pottery bath with a wide view and a balcony over the Toyosawa River. The shared bath Kiku-no-yu has a garden open-air bath (recirculated, the inn notes), a hiba open-air bath and a tub carved from granite. Sister inn of Hotel Shidotaira; a booked shuttle runs from Shin-Hanamaki and Hanamaki stations, 100 yen a person from 1 September 2026.
