Tattoo friendly onsen in Hanamaki

The Hanamaki valley runs from a cluster of resort hotels up to two of the oldest bathhouses in Tohoku, Namari and Osawa. Nobody along it publishes permission, and one of the old houses refuses tattooed guests at the front door of the building. So this page is ten places with a bath of your own, two of which will rent you one without staying the night.

Namari Onsen Fujisan Ryokan

Fujisan Ryokan publishes no tattoo rule, but one of its four baths, Gin-no-yu, turns into a private bath for part of each day. Day visitors can have it to themselves from 11:00 to 15:00, and overnight guests from 15:00 to 21:00 in 50-minute slots, six groups a day, first come first served. The famous Hakuen-no-yu is a traditionally mixed standing bath with no private hours, and the inn says nothing about tattoos there, so do not read the mixed bath as an invitation.

Best for: Renting a small spring-fed bath of your own in the inn that has the deep standing bath

Hakuen-no-yu: the inn gives its average depth as 1.25 m, bathed standing, with the spring rising in the tub itself rather than pumped in, “湯船の深さが平均1.25mもある立居浴専用の温泉”; the brief’s figure of four and a half meters does not appear on the operator’s page. It is mixed, “元来混浴”, with women-only hours 6:00 to 7:00, 11:00 to 13:00 and 20:00 to 22:00, and it closes Fridays 10:00 to 14:00 for cleaning. No bathing wrap is mentioned. Shiraito-no-yu and Gin-no-yu swap between men and women by the hour; Katsura-no-yu is split by sex. All four baths are free-flowing 57° simple alkaline spring, even the showers. Day bathing 10:00 to 21:00 (last entry 20:00), adults 800 yen, 1,100 yen at Golden Week, Obon and New Year; check-in for day bathing may stop 14:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays and nights before holidays. Toji wing (湯治部, its own line 0198-25-2901): retro 6 to 8 mat rooms with no toilet or sink, a shared kitchen with the old 10-yen gas meters, a kotatsu for 495 yen a night, and meals optional; toji guests may enter the ryokan side only to bathe. A reservation-only shuttle on the Hanamaki south valley line stops at the inn three times a day inbound, once outbound. The inn’s buildings were registered as national tangible cultural property in February 2026, according to its sister inn’s site.

Every room is a suite of 60 m² or more with its own open-air bath fed straight from the Namari spring, unheated, undiluted and not recirculated, so you never need the shared baths. The inn publishes no tattoo rule. Its guests may also use Fujisan Ryokan’s four baths, where the same silence applies.

Best for: A suite whose open-air tub runs the same spring as Namari’s old standing bath

The annex opened on the Fujisan Ryokan site and shares its address. Dinner is kaiseki with lava-stone steaming as the main course, according to the inn. Guests may bathe in all four Fujisan Ryokan baths, including the mixed Hakuen-no-yu.

Airinkan

結びの宿愛隣館

Airinkan rents a private bath called Chappun, an indoor tub plus a semi-open-air Shigaraki pottery tub, and sells rooms with their own open-air hot spring bath. It publishes nothing on tattoos. Its note that the large baths may be used in a bathing garment is a Pink Ribbon provision for people after breast surgery, not permission to cover a tattoo.

Best for: A family or couple wanting a rented bath without giving up a big-hotel stay

Chappun costs 2,200 yen on weekdays and 2,750 yen on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, when only overnight guests may book it; it is sold as an option or a plan extra. Rooms with an open-air hot spring bath include the special room 824 and the Hanakanmuri type. Three sources feed 17 tubs across the River, Mountain and Forest baths. The operator writes “大浴場は、入浴着を着用してご利用いただけます” and links it to the Pink Ribbon inn network. Day bathing 10:00 to 13:30 and 14:00 to 19:00 on days shown on its calendar. A reservation-only bus runs from Shin-Hanamaki, and the inn also meets trains at Hanamaki.

Hotel Shidotaira

Shidotaira has three private baths you rent by the session, and the hotel calls them completely private. The largest, Kogane-no-yu, has an indoor tub and a rock open-air bath for 3,000 yen; the pottery bath and the hiba bath are 2,000 yen each. The hotel publishes no tattoo rule for its two big bath halls, so the rental baths are the answer.

Private baths take bookings 11:30 to 21:00 (last 20:30); the page links to online booking. Kogane-no-yu (黄金の湯) comes with an open-air bath, 3,000 yen; Toki-no-yu (陶器の湯) and Hiba-no-yu (ひばの湯) are 2,000 yen. The shared halls are Tenga-no-yu, a 25 m viewing bath with a lava-stone sauna, and Hitakami-no-yu, two stories high with a cave sauna for self-loyly; they swap sexes on odd and even days. Day bathing 11:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 20:00 entry, adults 1,000 yen on weekdays. The whole hotel closed for maintenance on 16 and 17 September 2026. A shuttle runs from Shin-Hanamaki and Hanamaki stations, 100 yen a person from 1 September 2026. The hotel also runs an AI chat assistant (talkappi) on its site, which was not queried.

Yusen Shidate

All 26 rooms at Shidate have an open-air bath set to look over the river, so a tattooed guest can bathe without ever entering the shared baths. The inn publishes no tattoo rule for its shared open-air baths. Room tubs come in stone, rock and pottery.

Yamanokami Onsen Yukaen

Yukaen rents a private bath to its overnight guests by the hour, 2,200 yen, in six evening slots from 15:00 to 22:30. It is sized for two or three people and has its own washing area and shower. The inn publishes no tattoo rule for its big open-air baths.

Best for: An hour in a private bath after dinner at a riverside inn

Private bath bookings are taken 14:00 to 22:00; start times are 15:00, 16:30, 18:00, 19:30, 21:00 and 22:30. Guests only: day visitors cannot rent it. The inn’s Toyosawa-no-yu open-air bath is about fifty mats across both sides, which it calls the largest in the Hanamaki valley; day visitors use a separate building, Nagomi-no-yu. Its site carries the Granbell hotel group’s membership and terms. A shuttle on the Hanamaki south valley line leaves from Hanamaki Station east exit, 100 yen one way from 1 September 2026.

Hotel Hanamaki

Four private hot spring baths opened in the hotel basement in December 2022, and they take 45-minute bookings from 6:30 to 23:00. The group sells them to day visitors as well as guests, so you can book one without staying. Hanamaki Onsen publishes no tattoo rule anywhere on its site, which makes the private baths the way in.

Best for: Booking a private bath in Hanamaki Onsen with or without a room

Day visitors pay 3,300 yen for the private bath plus the day-bathing fee (1,200 yen weekdays, 1,500 yen weekends and holidays); guests pay a separate charge. Book through the Hanamaki Onsen reservation center or Jalan; booked customers take priority. There is a 20 cm step and a 50 cm tub edge. Towels are provided. The new garden open-air bath Hanamaki Manten-no-yu (November 2024) is open to guests of every group hotel and has no indoor bath or sauna. In the same basement, Hourai-yu is a plain local bathhouse entered from the road to Dai Onsen. Guests move between Hotel Hanamaki, Senshukaku and Koyokan by a connecting passage, the Rose Walk. Hotel Senshukaku

Senshukaku has no private bath of its own, but its page lists the four private baths next door at Hotel Hanamaki as part of its bathing, and those baths are sold to anyone. Walk over by the Rose Walk passage and book a 45-minute slot. The group publishes no tattoo rule.

Best for: A Hanamaki Onsen room with private baths one building away

The quote shows the guests’ right to the neighboring baths; the private baths themselves are in Hotel Hanamaki’s basement, 6:30 to 23:00, 45 minutes, extra charge. Senshukaku’s own Senshu-no-yu added a tsubo tub and a falling-water bath in December 2022, and the women’s side runs a rose bath for part of the year. Like its two neighbors, Koyokan points guests to the four private baths in Hotel Hanamaki, which anyone can book by the 45 minutes. It has no private bath in its own building. The group publishes no tattoo rule.

Private baths: Hotel Hanamaki basement, 6:30 to 23:00, 45 minutes, extra charge. Koyokan’s own Koyo-no-yu has a rock open-air bath, a tsubo tub, a cool-down terrace and a fitness room on the same floor. Booking.com priced it lowest of the three linked hotels on 2026-11-10. Hanamaki Onsen Kashoen

Kashoen rebuilt some rooms in 2022 and 2023 with a hinoki semi-open-air or open-air bath on the inn’s own spring, and those rooms are the answer. It publishes no tattoo rule for its large bath or its hinoki open-air bath. Book a room marked 温泉付き; the standard rooms have no spring bath.

Traveler’s note

Namari’s old inn is worth the extra bus ride for its own sake: you bathe standing, with the spring rising through the gravel floor of the tub. Both Namari and Osawa still run self-catering wings for week-long cure stays, with shared kitchens, and those are sold differently from ordinary nights with dinner. If you are booking one night, make sure that is what you are booking.

Common questions

Hanamaki questions

Does any bath in Hanamaki allow tattoos?

None publishes permission. Osawa Onsen refuses tattooed guests entry to the building itself, on its own terms of use and on its day-bathing page. Everybody else in the valley has never addressed it, so this page is private baths.

Can I rent a private bath without staying?

Yes, at two places. One resort hotel rents its four private baths to day visitors for 3,300 yen on top of admission, and Namari’s inn makes one of its baths private for day visitors between eleven and three.

What is a cure stay?

An older way of using a hot spring: a week or more in a simple room with a shared kitchen, bathing several times a day. Namari and Osawa both keep a wing for it. The rooms are cheap and plain, and they are booked separately from the inn’s ordinary rooms.

How do I get there from Sendai?

About two hours ten: the Yamabiko Shinkansen to Kitakami, one stop back on the local line to Hanamaki, then an Iwate Kotsu bus up to the onsen. Namari and Osawa are further up the same valley on their own buses.
