Does Itoen Hotel Inatori allow tattoos? In a private bath
Itoen Hotel Inatori keeps one private open-air bath beside its shared ones: a square stone tub behind a bamboo fence, looking into the trees, at one of the lowest private-bath fees in town.
The hotel’s hot spring page refuses bathers with tattoos, and the Itoen chain’s FAQ on the same site tells tattooed guests to use a private bath or the bath in the room instead of the large bath and open-air bath. The private bath here is a small open-air stone tub among the trees, ¥1,650 for 50 minutes, reserved at the front desk on the day.
The bath
The private open-air bath is a square tub with a pale stone rim set on a timber deck, with a bamboo fence in front and trees beyond. It opens from 3 to 10:30 p.m. and again from 6 to 9:15 a.m. One session is 50 minutes and costs ¥1,650. A reservation is required, and you make it at the front desk on the day.
The shared baths are on the fourth floor of the Amagi wing, under the name Shiosai-no-yu. There are two halls, each with a sauna, and they change over between men and women so you can use one at night and the other in the morning. The open-air bath looks out to Cape Tomoro and Sagami Bay and follows the same changeover. Hours are 3 p.m. to midnight and 5 to 11 a.m., shortened on Tuesdays and Thursdays to 4 p.m. to midnight and 5 to 10 a.m.
The water is a sodium and calcium chloride spring, neutral and hot at the source. The hotel calls it salty and good at holding heat, and lists it for joint and muscle pain, bruises and chronic skin trouble. Lockers for room keys and valuables are in the fourth-floor bath area.
The hotel
A 70-room hotel of the Itoen chain on the slope above Inatori, mostly Japanese rooms with tatami mats and some Western rooms with beds. Every room has free Wi-Fi, a refrigerator and a safe, and towels are taken from the room to the bath. Pets are not accepted. Check-in is from 3 p.m. Parking for about 40 cars is free for staying guests. The hotel warns drivers that car navigation may pick lanes too narrow to drive, and asks them to come in by prefectural road 114 and the station road.
