Does Shinyu no Yado SAZANA allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

SAZANA is the smaller, quieter sister of the big Tokai Hotel Yuen next door: an inn done in warm Asian style, with two private baths over the water and open-air tubs in its best rooms.

The inn’s FAQ keeps tattoos out of the large bath and points to its private baths, which are paid and booked ahead. It has two private baths, a view bath at ¥1,000 plus tax for 40 minutes and an open-air bath with an indoor tub attached, and three room types with a spring-fed open-air tub. Guests may also use the big baths of the sister hotel Yuen 30 seconds away, but Yuen firmly refuses bathers with tattoos, so keep to the private baths and the room tubs.

The bath

The inn has two private baths. Umi-no-Shirabe is the private view bath: a wide indoor tub in pale tile with windows on the sea, let for 40 minutes at ¥1,000 plus tax. It is by reservation, taken in the order guests ask. Yururuka is the private open-air bath, which the inn recommends to couples: a roomy space with an open-air tub that looks straight out to the water and an indoor tub beside it. It opens from 3 to 11 p.m. and from 7 to 9 a.m.

Three room types have an open-air bath of their own: a 10-tatami Japanese room on the sea side, a twin with semi-double beds and a king room. Their tubs are fed from the Inatori Kanko No. 3 source, a clear, salty water close to seawater in its minerals, and can be used at any hour.

The shared bath is called Kupukupu-no-yu, and the inn's main supply is the Inatori Motoyu No. 2 source, a sodium and calcium chloride spring that the inn says keeps you warm long after the bath. Staying guests may also walk 30 seconds to the sister hotel Yuen and use its large view baths.

The hotel

A small seaside inn in Asian style, sister to the Inatori Tokai Hotel Yuen beside it. Besides the three types with open-air tubs it has Japanese rooms of 10 to 15 tatami mats, Japanese-Western comfort rooms and Western rooms of 23 to 25 square meters. Check-in is from 3 p.m., with the last check-in at 6 p.m. for guests taking dinner, which starts between 6 and 7 p.m.; guests on breakfast-only or room-only plans may arrive until 9 p.m. Check-out is 10 a.m. A bathing tax of ¥150 a person is charged separately.

Getting there

The inn gives about 2 hours 20 minutes from Tokyo to Izu-Inatori Station on the direct Odoriko limited express, or about 70 minutes from Atami after the Shinkansen. From the station it is about a 15-minute walk along the shore. The inn also collects guests from the station in its own minibus. How we know

Confirmed from official site (the inn’s own FAQ, opened from the questions button on its site, under the question on the large bath, for the refusal; its own bath and room pages for the private bathing)

誠に申し訳ございませんが、入れ墨やタトゥーの入ったお客様には大浴場のご利用をご遠慮いただいております。

This is the rule for the shared baths. It doesn’t apply to the private baths.

Best for: couples who want a low-cost private view bath and a room tub filled from an Inatori source

Private view bath Umi-no-Shirabe: 40 minutes, ¥1,000 plus tax, reserved in order of request. Private open-air bath Yururuka has an open-air tub and an indoor tub, open 3 to 11 p.m. and 7 to 9 a.m. Room open-air tubs use the Inatori Kanko No. 3 source, which the inn describes as salty and clear.
