Does Senoumi Bettei Umiusagi allow tattoos? In a private bath
Umiusagi, the annex of Senoumi, has no big bath of its own. In its place are four private open-air tubs on the seventh floor, one for each season, open to any guest who finds a door free.
The inn publishes no tattoo rule. Its bathing is built around four private open-air baths on the seventh floor, named for the four seasons, free and used without a reservation whenever one is empty. A few rooms also have an open-air tub of their own. The big shared baths belong to the main house, Senoumi, which asks tattooed guests to stay out of them.
The bath
All the bathing here is private. On the seventh floor are four open-air baths that any staying guest may use at no charge: Haru-usagi, Natsu-usagi, Aki-usagi and Fuyu-usagi, the rabbits of spring, summer, autumn and winter. There are no reservations. You go up, see which is free and take it. From the tubs you look out over the sea to the Izu islands. The photos show a broad square tub of pale cypress, raised on a timber deck inside walls of slatted wood, with a wide window opening on the water.
The baths are open from mid-afternoon to 11:30 p.m. and again from 5:30 to 9 a.m. Bath towels are taken up from the room. The water is a lightly salty spring that the inn lists for the skin, nerve pain and cold sensitivity.
Four rooms go one step further with an open-air bath of their own. Rooms 506, 507 and 508 are 28 square meters plus a tub the inn says is big enough for two to relax in, facing the open sea. Room 706 had its open-air bath rebuilt in December 2023.
The hotel
A 24-room annex of the Inatori inn Senoumi, in Japanese modern style: beds set on tatami mats, with interiors by the architect Atsushi Kawai and the interior coordinator Yuriko Sumi. Every room is non-smoking, with smoking places on the third and seventh floors, and Wi-Fi is free throughout. Check-in is from 3 to 6 p.m. and check-out at 10 a.m. A free car park is 3 to 4 minutes away on foot, and a paid one, ¥1,000 a night, is within a minute. The rocky seaside garden Iso Sea Garden Ikejiri is a minute's walk.
