Does Ibusuki Phoenix Hotel allow tattoos? In a private bath

The open-air bath here is built as a cave, and the sand bath is under a roof, which the hotel admits is a man-made bed warmed by pumped hot spring water. The two family baths rent by the hour and hold four people.

The hotel says nothing about tattoos and keeps two family baths hired by the room, which is the part a tattooed guest can rely on. Everything else is shared: a cave-shaped open-air bath, a large bath on water from the source, and an indoor sand bath the hotel is unusually honest about, describing it as a man-made sand bed warmed with pumped hot spring water rather than the natural kind.

Where it is

Hakata to Ibusuki is about 3 h 25: the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo, then the Ibusuki Makurazaki line down the coast, which the sightseeing train Ibusuki no Tamatebako also runs. Ureshino is about 1 h 20, a limited express to Takeo-Onsen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen one stop further. Two private family baths at 2,200 yen per room per hour for up to four people, 550 yen for each adult beyond that. The indoor sand bath costs 1,800 yen for adults and 1,100 yen for children, taken in order of arrival rather than booked, with the yukata handed out at the entrance to the large bath and a head towel provided on the sand; cameras and phones are barred from the sand bath area. Day visitors can use the large bath for 550 yen. School groups occasionally take the large bath and the sand bath for a set period.
