Tattoos are allowed only if a seal or similar cover hides them. No size is named and nothing is sold here, so bring your own cover.

The bath
The water is the point: fossil seawater pumped from 1,500 meters, a salty spring so rich in ancient plant matter that it runs black, undiluted and at about the salinity of the body. The tubs are drained every night and refilled every morning. Nine baths use it, some built of bamboo, charcoal and stone, at different temperatures, with four stone-bed sauna rooms and a mugwort steam room for women. Open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the year: ¥1,080 on weekdays for as long as you like, or ¥650 for a 60-minute crow’s bath, more on weekends. Towels and indoor wear are rented, and the stone-bed sauna is ¥800 on top.
The hotel
Not a hotel. It's a day spa with lounges, a restaurant and a garden.
Good to know
- Undiluted black water from 1,500 meters, drained and refilled every night.
- Covered means allowed. Bring your own seals; none are sold here.
- Take 20 liters of the water home. The shop sells the natural hot-spring water, and Jindaiji temple, Tokyo’s second oldest, is a few minutes away.
Getting there
The shuttle runs every day; when it's full you wait for the next or walk from the nearest bus stop. Fifty parking spaces three minutes away.
