Does Yuen Bettei Daita allow tattoos? Yes, covered

Cover seal required

Tattoos are allowed in the shared baths if a cover seal hides them. The front desk sells the seals.

The answer is in the ryokan's own Q&A. It names no seal size and no price.

The bath

The open-air bath is built of hiba, an aromatic cypress, and filled with spring water brought in from Ashinoko Onsen in Hakone. Next to it is an indoor bath that looks onto a courtyard garden. The women's side has a mist sauna and the men's a dry sauna.

Guests can bathe from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., or to 2 p.m. on weekends and holidays, and again from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. The bath is not open to walk-in visitors. Day plans exist, but only with a meal, a spa treatment or a workshop, booked online at least two days ahead.

The hotel

A ryokan at 2-31-26 Daita in Setagaya, west of Shimokitazawa. Rooms run from 19 to 32 m². Most have a shower room and no tub, and the ones with an open-air bath of their own fill it with plain hot water, not the spring. Check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout is 11 a.m., and a ¥150 bathing tax is added per person.

The ryokan has a Japanese restaurant, Kappo Tsukikage, and a tea room.

What happens when you arrive

Cover the tattoo completely with a seal before you go in. The ryokan doesn't specify a size, so cover everything.
