Does Narita Airport Onsen Sora no Yu allow tattoos? In a private bath
The communal baths refuse tattoos larger than a palm, but the reservable private baths on the 2nd floor have no restriction. Book one separately.
Private baths for anything larger than a palm. Since September 1, 2022 the 3rd-floor communal baths refuse tattoos, but the same notice still admits small ones, "about the size that a palm would cover," on the stated reasoning that they intimidate nobody. The 2nd-floor reservable baths are exempt and carry no restriction.

The bath
A real spring, from 1,000 meters down: fossil seawater, which the facility says feels slippery on the skin. The 3rd-floor communal baths, an open-air bath with the aircraft going over, an indoor bath, a sauna and a Korean scrub, have refused tattooed guests since September 1, 2022, with one exception the same notice makes. A tattoo small enough to hide under a palm is still admitted, on the reasoning that it intimidates nobody. Anything larger, and the communal baths aren't for you. The private baths are on the 2nd floor, reservable, and exempt. The operator's own notice says to book them and use them as before. A private bath needs a bathing plan of ¥1,000 or more on top of your room.
The hotel
The accommodation is a capsule hotel, Hokutosei, on the 2nd floor: 120 berths in fully separate men's and women's sections. That's what the booking sites are selling, so know it before you book. Capsules are available from 5 p.m., but the baths, stone saunas and rest areas are open to overnight guests from 10 a.m. on the day of arrival, which turns a night before a flight into most of a day. The restaurant Amanogawa on the ground floor cooks with produce and fish from the Hokuso region and looks onto a Japanese garden. The café and bar Kirahoshi upstairs does drinks, ice cream and, lately, pizza from a Narita pizzeria. There's a 24-hour Anytime Fitness in the building, a golf studio, rental bikes and a hair salon, and a shop for what you forgot.
Good to know
- A real hot spring beside the runway. The private baths are exempt from the refusal, and the notice says so in writing.
- A wood stove in the rest area in winter, with reclining chairs, a manga corner and a café and bar down the corridor from the private baths.
- Free shuttle to Terminals 2 and 3. Terminal 1 needs the train.
Getting there
By rail it's five minutes from Keisei Narita to Higashi-Narita, then three on the Shibayama Railway. Buy a paper ticket through to Shibayama-Chiyoda.
