Does Narita Airport Onsen Sora no Yu allow tattoos? In a private bath
The shared baths are restricted, but a private or in-room bath is open to you. You are bathing alone or with your own party, so the communal rule does not apply.
Private baths only. The second-floor reservable baths are explicitly exempt and carry no tattoo restriction. The third-floor communal baths have refused tattooed guests since 1 September 2022, with one exception: a tattoo small enough to hide under a palm is still admitted.

The bath
A real spring, from a thousand metres down: fossil seawater, which the facility says carries iodine at 1,500 times the concentration of the sea, with enough metasilicic acid and bicarbonate to feel slippery on the skin. The third-floor communal baths — an open-air bath with the aircraft going over, an indoor bath, a sauna and a Korean scrub — are the ones that have refused tattooed guests since 1 September 2022, and you should not use them.
The private baths are on the second floor, reservable, and exempt: the operator’s own notice says to book them and use them as before. A private bath needs a bathing plan of 1,000 yen or more on top of your room. Down the corridor from them are the stone saunas, a café and bar, a manga corner and a rest area with reclining chairs and, in winter, a wood stove.
The hotel
The accommodation is a capsule hotel, Hokutosei, on the second floor: 120 berths in fully separate men’s and women’s sections. That is what the booking sites are selling, so know it before you book. Capsules are available from 17:00, but the baths, stone saunas and rest areas are open to overnight guests from 10:00 on the day of arrival, which turns a night before a flight into most of a day.
The restaurant Amanogawa on the ground floor cooks with produce and fish from the Hokuso region and looks onto a Japanese garden; the café and bar Kirahoshi upstairs does drinks, ice cream and, lately, pizza from a Narita pizzeria. There is a 24-hour Anytime Fitness in the building, a golf studio, rental bikes and a hair salon, and a shop for what you forgot.
What is good about it
- A real hot spring beside the runway — the private baths are exempt from the refusal, and say so in writing.
- In from ten in the morning on the day you sleep there, capsule or not.
- Free shuttle to Terminals 2 and 3. Terminal 1 needs the train.
Getting there
A free shuttle runs to and from Narita Airport Terminals 2 and 3 — not Terminal 1. By rail it is Keisei Narita to Higashi-Narita, five minutes, then the three-minute Shibayama Railway to Shibayama-Chiyoda STN and a three-minute walk; Shibayama-Chiyoda does not take IC cards, so buy a paper ticket through to it.
