Does Ryokan Yoshidaya allow tattoos? In a private bath

Ninety years old and rebuilt into something that smells of tea and plays jazz, with soft indirect light on earth walls and an eight-ton single boulder hollowed out to make the open-air tub in Kumano-yu.

Nothing is published about tattoos across the whole Yoshidaya group site. Three rented family baths are: Anshin-yu in rock, Oumi-yu in earth walls and the open-air Kifu-yu, sold by the 50 minutes to guests and to day visitors. Rooms in the onsen-attached grades have a tub of their own, and the annex Worikara is let one building at a time.

Where it is

Hakata to Ibusuki is about 3 h 25: the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo, then the Ibusuki Makurazaki line down the coast, which the sightseeing train Ibusuki no Tamatebako also runs. Ureshino is about 1 h 20, a limited express to Takeo-Onsen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen one stop further. Kurokawa has no railway at all: the coach from Hakata takes about 2 h 40 by way of Hita and Tsuetate. The blue dashes are the way here from Hakata Bus Terminal: the Kyushu-go coach, which stops in the middle of the bath district rather than at the station two kilometers out, 2 h 12 in all; 2,200 yen against 4,870 by train, and eleven minutes slower; one run of the day stops at the expressway interchange instead, a 26-minute walk out. Best for: A rented family bath in earth-walled or rock-built rooms, with a jazz-scored lounge outside

Nineteen rooms, no two laid out alike, in grades from standard up to Onsen-tsuki Premium and High Grade. Day-use rented bath 4,400 yen for 50 minutes Monday to Friday and 5,500 yen at weekends and before holidays; day-use of the large baths costs 1,650 yen for adults on weekdays and 2,200 yen at weekends. The rebuilt Toyotama-yu has four tubs and its own sauna, and swaps between men and women: men 15:00–24:00, women 06:00–09:30. There is also a rentable bedrock bath, Tsuwabuki, and an Ureshino-tea steam room. Spring listed as ナトリウム、炭酸水素塩、塩化物泉.
