Does Ekimae Koto Onsen allow tattoos? Yes!
A 1924 bathhouse in Taisho western dress, green paint and a pointed roof, standing two minutes from the station among the pachinko signs. It has kept its two separate springs, one hot and one merely warm.
The green-roofed bathhouse outside Beppu Station has no site of its own, and the city’s listings are the only published word on it. Both of them say the same thing: the tourism entry carries the タトゥー可 mark, and the enjoyONSEN facility line spells it out. Two tubs, a hot one and a cooler one, both shared.
The bath
There are two waters in the building rather than one, and they come from different springs: an atsu-yu and a nuru-yu in separate rooms, so you choose which you are bathing in when you pay. Outside the front door is a hand bath, free to anyone walking past.
The few rooms upstairs are simple lodging, and their being occupied changes the hours downstairs. Normally the bath runs 08:00 to 23:00; on nights when somebody is staying it opens at 06:00 and stays open to midnight.
Closed the first Monday. Adults 250 yen, children 150. Towels are sold at the counter and the dryer costs extra. Five parking spaces. The building is a 1924 bathhouse dressed as a small western villa, and it stands on a street of pachinko signs two minutes from the station, which is most of the surprise of it.
What is good about it
- Two different springs, hot and warm, in separate rooms, so you pick one at the counter.
- A hand bath outside the door, free to anyone passing.
- Longer hours when the rooms are taken, 06:00 to midnight instead of 08:00 to 23:00.
Getting there
Two minutes on foot from JR Beppu STN, on the street that runs out of the east exit past the bars and pachinko parlors.
