Nagaishi Onsen
永石温泉
Does Nagaishi Onsen allow tattoos? Yes!
Told in town as the bath that appeared overnight: a wooden bathhouse standing complete one morning on land the neighbors had bought and drilled. The present building went up in 1991 and the tub is still sunk below floor level.
Another of the twelve baths Beppu City owns, and the city marks it tattoo-friendly on its own tourism pages. The mark sits in the facility attributes beside the towel and soap prices, which is how the city keeps it current. Expect a small, sunken tub and no questions.
The bath
You step down into the tub rather than over a rim, because it is set below the floor of the room, and the water in it is a simple spring that arrives from the source and leaves again without being recycled. Around it is tile, a changing space and nothing else. Beside the building the city laid out a small stone pocket park, built with stone from Yantai in China, and that is where people sit to cool down.
Open 06:30 to 22:30, cleaning from 14:00 to 15:00, closed the second Tuesday. Adults 200 yen, children 100, with the ten-ticket book at 1,800 yen also good at Tano-yu, Hamawaki and Hamada. Soap, shampoo and a razor are 50 to 150 yen each at the counter. No parking, but the number 10 bus from the west exit of Beppu Station stops at Nagaishi Onsen-mae.
What is good about it
- A tub sunk below floor level, so you go down a step into the water.
- Source water, nothing recirculated, in a room with a tub and a changing space and no more.
- A stone pocket park next door, built with stone from Yantai, for sitting out afterward.
