A 1991 experiment in treating a hot spring as public health infrastructure, with a walking pool and a training room attached to the baths. The city still calls it a multi-purpose onsen recuperation hall.
The city built this place and still runs it, and its own tourism data marks it as a bath tattooed visitors may use. Beppu’s 2026 tattoo map lists it in the same group, under public baths rather than private ones. Bathing here is done nude in the bathing zone, so nothing is hidden and nothing needs to be.
The bath
The bathing zone is a circuit rather than a room with a tub in it. You begin at the kaburi-yu, pouring water over your head, then work through a bubble bath, a reclining bath, a full-immersion bath, a pressure-jet bath and an utaseyu spout that lands on your shoulders. Beyond them is a walking pool for pushing lengths against the water, and a tatami room for lying down between rounds. The water is a simple spring, piped down and not recirculated. A training room, built so that you can exercise before you bathe, costs 310 yen on top of the entry.
Open 10:00 to 22:00 with last entry at 21:00, closed Tuesdays. Adults 700 yen, children 350. Body soap, shampoo and dryers cost nothing here, where the city’s other baths charge 50 to 150 yen for each; a rented bath towel is 100 yen. Bathers park three hours free in the basement.

Getting there
The upper floors of the block that holds the Hamawaki communal bath, a quarter of an hour down the shore road from JR Beppu STN. The number 10 bus from the west exit takes nine minutes to the stop named after the building.
