Does Kaimon-ji Onsen allow tattoos? Yes!
A municipal bath since 1936, rebuilt in 2010 next to Kaimon-ji Park in a low wooden style that matches the trees. Two tubs at different temperatures make it the easy one to start with if 44°C water is new to you.
A municipal bath where the question is settled by the operator, because the operator is the city. Beppu City’s onsen site answers it in the facility line for this bath, and the city’s tourism entry repeats the mark. Bathe as you are; there is no seal and no back room.
The bath
The water is a sodium bicarbonate spring, the sort that leaves skin slick, and it reaches the tubs from the source rather than through a filter. The 2010 rebuild divided it between an atsu-yu and a nuru-yu, and put a bank of showers along the wall, which the smaller neighborhood baths in Beppu do not have. Floors are level from the door to the water, there are rails on the rim, and a bathing wheelchair is kept inside to transfer into. Turn up without a bath set and the counter sells soap at 150 yen, a shampoo pouch at 50 and a towel at 300.
Locals treat it as a daily bath, some of them twice, morning and evening, and they sit on the benches inside and outside afterward to talk.
Open 06:30 to 22:30, with the hour from 14:00 to 15:00 closed for cleaning, and closed the second Monday. Adults 250 yen, children 100. A dryer is 50 yen, whether you rent one or bring your own. Three spaces on site, and bathers get an hour free at the Tsurumi Car Park.
What is good about it
- Two temperatures side by side, so you can start in the nuru-yu and work up.
- Showers, and a bath set sold at the door, which most 250-yen baths here leave to you.
- Step-free from the entrance to the tub, with rails on the rim and a bathing wheelchair inside.
Getting there
Five minutes on foot from JR Beppu STN, out toward the seafront at Kitahama, with Kaimon-ji Park next door. The Tsurumi Car Park is a minute away and gives bathers an hour free.
